(More customer reviews)Fair disclosure: I've had this printer up and running for less than 48 hours. But the early results have been so incredibly good, I felt a review was in order. If you, like me, have been on an endless search for an AIO that actually worked as advertised and could hold its own with minimal compromise vs. more task specific printers, then I believe your search has ended with the 990.
Setup: A+. I have two Macs, one a PowerMac G5 running 10.5, the other a Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard, both on my Airport Extreme (simultaneous dual band) network, and setup was about as close to plug and play as you could get. Just BE SURE that if you're running 10.6, you download all the latest drivers from Canon's website. The software CD packed with the printer is not updated for Snow Leopard.
Wireless Performance: As noted above, connecting to my home network was a snap. I've had no dropped connections over two days. Now, I've never had a problem printing wirelessly in the past, but scanning wirelessly and reliably? Forget it. At least, until the 990, which worked flawlessly on both machines from the first scan. You'd swear that Apple, and not Canon, had designed this hardware/software solution. Pop in a document, click scan, choose which computer you want to send it to and you're done.
Printing Quality: A. Superb quality on both black text and color graphics, and all reasonably quick.
Photo Quality: Haven't gotten into this yet, but professional reviews posted thus far indicate that the photo printing performance is excellent.
Scanning/Copying Quality: A. Scans and copies are incredibly good. Haven't tried negs or slides as yet.
Ease of Use: A. If Apple designed its own printer, this is how it would work. An amazingly intuitive interface.
I'll post an update after I've put it through its paces a while longer, but it's a definite 5 stars out of the box. Thanks for taking the time to read this review--I hope you found the info useful in helping you make a buying decision!
Update as of 10/16/09:
The Bad News: Within 2 weeks of posting my review, this printer has dropped in price by $100! Oh well... that'll teach me to be first in line to buy a new model! :-)
The Good News: I rated it 5 stars at $299 and I still think it's every bit as good as noted in my review. At $199, it's now a steal of a deal as well.
UPDATE AS OF 12/7/09
The professional reviews are now coming in for the MP990, and they're raving: Computer Shopper gave it a 9 out of 10, and [...] gave it Editor's Choice, stating that they had a hard time coming up with any "cons" for their conclusion. I remain totally satisfied after two months of use.
UPDATE AS OF 4/3/10
So, 6 months after purchase, do I still think this is a 5 star printer? Well, yes and no. The printer performance remains every bit as good as previously described. But the ink usage has been another matter. While I've owned a variety of other inkjets, this is my first Canon, and I feel it penalizes you more than other brands for light usage. After printing perhaps 2-3 dozen pages with color on them--and I'm talking very moderate amounts of color and no printing of photos--I've just had to replace all five color cartridges at a cost of $50 at Amazon discount prices. Do the math and you realize that this is a huge cost-per-page, driven by this printer's all-too-frequent automatic cleaning cycles of the print cartridges, which use up large amounts of ink whether you're actually priniting or not. Of course, all inkjets do this, but I feel this Canon takes it to a whole other level that just seems like a blatant cleaning of your wallet. That said, if you print color regularly, the ink usage may well be on par with the norm.

(More customer reviews)First off, I just got this today, so I cannot comment on the long term reliability of this machine. From the initial setup and run through of its features, this is what I've come up with.
Print quality is awesome. I first copied the registration card as a test. It was amazing how it came out. I couldn't really tell which was the original and which was the copy. Even the handwritten portion was reproduced flawlessly. I then decided to make use of the 5 pack of high gloss 4x5 paper which is included so I figured I'd try it out on a very small prom picture of mine. It came out perfect. I copied it right onto the 4x5...expanding it to 176% and brightening it a little using only the settings on the 885CW itself to do so. The picture came out looking flawless. I also printed a quick word document that had similarly impressive qualities...the text was very dark as opposed to my old Lexmark AIO.
Then I scanned in the same picture and edited it with Photoshop. The picture looked very good at 900 pixels. No complaints there.
I also tried out the fax by sending in my registration form. It was a breeze and the fax preview proved very handy. You can have it scan the paper (either by feeding it like a normal fax (ADF) or the scanning glass), then preview it, mess around with a few settings and when it's all nice and pretty, off it goes...or skip the extra steps and just send it like a normal fax as most would probably do.
The cordless phone is an appreciated feature, and the speaker phone is loud and clear. Anyone who complained about the MFC-845CW's 20 second limit on incoming voice messages will be happy to know their feedback was heard by Brother. You can now select the time limit for messages, between 30 and 120 seconds.
I tried out the OCR feature which allows you to scan a document onto your computer and edit the text in a word processor. I was impressed with its ability to recognize typed documents, although anything handwritten is understandably out of the question.
Printing from a memory card is also simple. I did a real quick print and everything was good with it as well. There are some basic editing features on the machine, although I haven't really tried any of them and most likely won't in the future...as far as I'm concerned that's what Photoshop is for.
Overall layout of the Navigation screen was nice. The widescreen was very helpful and made selecting different options simple as you can fit more in at once. Easy navigation and very basic information...Setup was a breeze with my Linksys network...taking only the push of a couple buttons and it was good to go. I've got 2 computers currently sharing this printer...one is a laptop (wireless) and the other a desktop (USB). With the laptop comes my one and only complaint...read on...I'm running Windows XP Media Center Edition, Service Pack 2 on my laptop. The main program (Control Center 3) will not run on it. Whenever I try to load it, I get a terminal failure (The kind that asks to send Microsoft an error report). I did as much snooping around for a fix as I could...but didn't find anything. So I downloaded the latest set of utilities for the machine...but no help there. So this means that on my laptop right now I can still print, however I cannot receive information such as scans and such from the machine. I'm more then confident that when I get on the phone with Brother they will have a solution, or that an updated version of the program will be released fixing this. But I'll have to wait until Monday to do so.
To be fair I did purchase this fairly soon after its release so bugs are understandable. And they do not specifically mention Media Center Edition as a compatible operating system although it is implied when they say XP Home. My desktop is my powerhouse anyway so I do most of the editing on their...but still it's a frustrating problem none the less.I've been through my fair share of printers...from Lexmark to HP. This is the best I've come across. I'm a very demanding consumer, and spent hours researching before making this purchase. It was the most expensive on my list of "maybes"...but I figured I'd take a chance and I don't regret it in the least. I'll probably be using this printer for at least the better part of a decade so I decided to make it a good one. As far as the software is concerned, yes it is an inconvenience, but most likely a temporary one...I'm certain many people would have docked a point or two for that, but for me the excess of quality makes up for such a blaring issue with the software...and most likely the people reading this review will not have an issue with it because I'm sure my case is fairly isolated and isn't directly related to my Operating System, rather something else that's going on. In the future I'll install it on an identical laptop with the same operating system (we have 3 in my house) and see if the problem reoccurs.
Good luck with finding the right AIO for yourself. It would take a rare breed to find disappointment with the MFC-885CW, but everyone has different standards for their different uses. For me, this is perfect.

The HP1522nf had everything I was looking for--Fax, Scan, laser printing, feeder, PPM requirements--and what I thought was HP quality. Although we purchased it from Amazon.com on 4/17, the printer was not placed into use until 5/1 because we were still in construction mode on our business. On May 1, I spent several hours on the phone with HP tech support...in India...and I couldn't understand most of what they said. Worse, they couldn't understand *me.* And I speak very clearly.
I was told that the printer could not be plugged into a surge protector--has to be plugged straight into the wall, and they eventually decided that I needed to download the printer software from HP's website to cure the fact that the printer simply would not operate after printing one page.
I uninstalled the software that I'd installed from HP's disc. The problem here is that the uninstall doesn't remove all of the software it's installed. It leaves tons of junk on the computer. I reinstalled with the fresh download and the printer worked for about a week. The scan and FAX functions refused to work, but I had a business to open and didn't have time to sit on the phone with HP tech support for hour after hour.
On May 20th, I called HP tech support and the first question I asked was why they had never checked back with me as they said they'd do. The response was that they'd closed the file as "successfully handled" because (they claimed) when tech support tried to call me back, they found my number disconnected. My number was NOT disconnected, but the number they were calling had absolutely not one digit in common with my number.
I spent two days on the phone with tech support, uninstalling and reinstalling the software over and over, coaxing the printer to please do something right, trying to understand what the HP tech support people were saying... It was MEGA-frustrating.
The problems? The printer would print once, and then turn itself off. HP absurdly placed the switch in the back (lower left side), so in order to power cycle the printer, it's really handy if you know how to do yoga. However, power cycling it would do nothing after awhile. The printer turned itself off and stayed off.
HP tech support asked me to FAX them the receipt, which I did (before the printer finally decided to stay dead), and HP's tech support had the gall to complain that it was too blurry to read. Having been sent with one of their printers and received on their equipment, the quality of the FAX would be HP's problem--not mine.
The machine would not scan. Trying to run the scan software resulted in a pop-up window telling me that the scan had failed, did I want to try again. It never scanned.
The computer I installed the software on unfortunately runs Vista. I asked if this could be the problem. HP tech support thought not. However, when trying to input data into the FAX feature on the computer, I ran into a series of annoying problems. For example, inputting the business name required that I input one letter and then the HP software would spit up a yellow caution sign window with the letter and a question mark. I'd click "OK," and then enter another letter, at which point HP software would spit up the same yellow caution sign with the new letter and a question mark. I'd click "OK"...and this is how the entire business name had to be entered! One letter at a time and no spaces. Hitting the space bar would bounce the cursor back to the beginning. I kludged that problem by inserting an underscore between words. It's insane!
Finally HP tech support decided it was a bad printer and that they needed to replace my brand new straigh-out-of-the-box printer with a used refurbished one! That's when I blew up. And that's when HP lost me as a customer.
I complained vociferously. They said they'd review the issues, but replacing with a used refurbished unit was all HP policy allows.
I wrote scathing emails to HP tech support and to HP's CEO (whose email address is on the HP website if you're patient enough to search for it). I decided to cc Amazon.com as well.
Next morning, I received a wonderful email from Amazon telling me that due to the extenuating circumstances, they'd already shipped me a new printer and sent a label for the return of the non-functional unit. Amazon ROCKS!
Then I received a call from HP tech support telling me in pidgin English that they'd reviewed the situation and would send me a used refurbished unit. It was great fun to tell them to go pound sand.
My new printer arrived as scheduled. I spent hours on my computer--weeding through folders, uninstalling every particle of HP software I could find--looking in hidden folders (they're in there too), as well as taking ownership of items and changing permissions in order to dump eons of the nasty buggers. I plugged the printer INTO THE WALL RECEPTICLE. I installed the software from a fresh download.
It works. It FAXes. (The first two FAXes failed, but after that it worked. I still had to enter the business name header one letter at a time, each letter followed by the annoying sign and clicking "OK.") It scans. It prints. It doesn't turn itself off. BUT--after reading these reviews, I have to wonder how long this "success" will hold.
I wish I'd bought any other brand printer. Brother printers seem to be garnering good reviews, but based on past experience with having to kick those suckers to print, I decided against Brother. Epson seems to be having success. Really, ANYTHING has to be better than an HP printer.
Until HP gets its act together with technically-correct software and printers that work, and more importantly--MOVES THEIR TECH SUPPORT BACK TO THE UNITED STATES--I refuse to do business with them. I've bought probably 10 HP printers over the past few years. Maybe more. I don't mind spending a little time on the phone with tech support for minor issues. But in the past two years--it's happened with every single printer with every single set-up, and it's gotten old. So long, HP. Your printers don't work. Your software doesn't work. And your tech support is atrocious.

My old Dell A940 was much more helpful. The V305 cannot work faxes, and if in fact it can print envelopes, there are no instructions anyplace for it. The owner's manual is useless for info on faxing or envelope printing. Useless.

(More customer reviews)I tested both the Brother MFC 9700 and MFC 9800 before buying a Brother flatbed machine. I have owned a Brother MFC 1950MC for many years and had been very happy with its performance. The only reasons I was changing machines was because the MFC 1950MC was not compatible with Windows XP. I ended up with the MFC 9700 because the differences between the two units was not enough to pay the extra cost of the MFC 9800. After installing the unit which I found quite easy I started trying out its different features. I found they all worked with clarity and quality in reproduction of copies, scans and printing. I have yet to find any quirks or problems with the machine that I can't resolve myself without having to go to Brother technical services. One thing I do suggest if you have Windows XP is to use the USB port rather than the parrallel port. I tried it with both and found the transmission of data when printing from the computer was faster with USB. I hope this helps in making a decision whether to buy this unit.

Panasonic Multifunction Laser Printer and Communication Center (KX-MB2061) Review

(More customer reviews)Our office has a new Savin multifunction copier, fax, scanner machine ... and I love it. The Panasonic sounded like it did a lot of the same functions. Especially the sending of document scans to a scan folder or email. It also sends faxes to a computer file or email. This saves having to print out every fax. It can also send verbal messages from it's answering device to the computer as an audio file making it so much easier to store messages. Frankly, it's a lot of machine for the money. NOW THE DOWN SIDE ... you'd better be a IT whiz if you intend to get any of these wonderful features to work. The PDF Instruction Manuel is 156 pages and the instructions bounce you back and forth constantly from one page to another page. All things considered, this is far too complicated for a person with novice or mid-range IT skills. I'm sure the instructions were very sensible to the person who designed the multi-funcion machine.

(More customer reviews)This review is based on usage in a small business where the device is at a satellite office.
This is a good piece of Hardware by HP, but as is typical of HP scanners the software is weak. The printer makes excellent images. The machine is fast from the time you click on print to when the page starts printing, and the printing is fast. This is the highlight of the machine. Two sided copying is excellent. The automatic document feature works well for copy and fax, but the scannning software is a problem.
The first machine I got had a defective fax board, but the store I bought it from let me return it for a new unit. Setup of the machine worked well. You can configure it using a built in web server. You might have trouble finding the machine on the nework, though. Unfortunately it does not respond to ping broadcast packets. You can go to the front panel and go through the menus to print a network report to see what IP address it selected. From there the web access works best to set up the machine. Setting a manual IP address is easy enough from the front panel so you know what IP address to connect to. You can get an optional second paper tray.
While setup of the machine via the web access works well it is limited in that the fax cannot be set up through the web interface. This is unfortunate, since the fax settings are tedious to enter from the front panel. You can use the web interface for the address book, but setting fax settings like address, speed, report settings, and everything else are not changeable except through the front panel.
As far as scanning goes, this is not a push scan device. (A push scan device is one where the scanner does the scan, then transfers to another computer by a network protocol like FTP or SMB). There is a button on the machine to scan, but that just starts up the program you have to install on your computer. The HP scan software is difficult to use and unintuitive. Definitely NOT production environment. It is also bloatwear. Over a thousand files get installed on the computer that serves as the scanning control computer. Also, whenever you scan the document comes out at 17 inches on the computer. The workaround in my setting is to fax to our fax server, which takes the calls and keeps the faxes. In this way I have a push scan option at the cost of a phone call for each scan. But if you have a business you do not want to use this as the document scanner using the HP softwear. I do not know if VueScan works with this device.
If you just need a postscript printer then this will work out of the box. For the advanced features that the printer supports you need to install the postscript driver. It may be possible to install the postscript driver without the scan softwear, which would be best if you have several computers that need to use the printer. I specifically did not install the scan softwear at the satellite location where I use the printer and it works fine as a generic postscript printer. (I installed the bloated HP scanning softwear at the main office where I did the initial configuration)
The printer is the same engine as in the HP LaserJet P2015dn Printer (HP LaserJet P2015dn Printer (CB368A#ABA)). Review there are good for understanding more about the printing function. The cartridge, an HP 53, is shared between this multifunction device and the P2015dn. In a small office having the same cartridge used by different printers simplifies inventory issues.
So, for home use and occasional scanning this is a nice machine, fast to print with very high quality printing. For an office environment it is good as a printer and copier, but the scanning software would choke anyone who needed to do document scanning as part of the business workflow.

(More customer reviews)I'm pretty technologically savvy, but this machine has been nothing but a pain since Day One. It has a lot of snazzy features, all of which are extremely difficult to use. You have to go through a dozen steps to pull off one function. And when you lose power in that next storm... guess what!... you get to go through all those steps to set up everything again.
Even simple functions like copying and faxing take forever because you get paper jams left and right. Also, the memory fills up quickly (one fax of a couple pages can fill it up) and then it refuses to print any future faxes until the memory is cleared out. In the business world, missed faxes mean lost money.
Technically, our MFC-970MC is in great shape, but I'm looking to fork out another couple hundred dollars for something different because it has been such a time drain and irritation.

The MFC-970Mc is a six-in-one machine that serves as a scanner, fax machine, PC fax, copier, printer, and phone and fax message center. The scanner includes Visioneer PaperPort software, is TWAIN compliant, and has a maximum resolution of 400 x 400 dpi interpolated. I have a small home office and use this printer primarily for business type tasks. I replaced a Samsung All-in-One Laser printer with this HP All-in-One. I will also be writing reviews for other devices that I use for business travel and backcountry backpacking including: HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus AirPrint enabled printer, Solio Rocsta H1000 Solar Charger and Verizon MiFi 2200, five device 3G mobile broadband HotSpot. The primary features that were critical to my decision were AirPrint, duplex printing, and double sided copying. None of these features were available on the Samsung. HP is the only company that offers AirPrint. This allows printing directly from iOS4.2 enabled iPad, iPod Touch 4th Gen, and iPhone 4. ePrinting is not the same and I will discuss the advantages of both. HP also offers a free app for the iPod devices called iPrint. I will explore some of those cool features.
This review will also compare a few feature differences between the 8500A and the 8500A plus. I was very close to buying the 8500A, but opted for the improved features of the 8500A Plus. I hope this comparison will allow you to make a better choice too.=== AirPrint compared to ePrint ===
Another feature unique to the Apple iPod Touch 4th Gen device, iPad, and iPhone 4 is AirPrint. It should be noted that the iPod Touch 3rd gen with iOS4.2 cannot AirPrint. One more reason that swayed my decision to buy the 4th Gen device. AirPrint is different from ePrinting. AirPrint allows you to print almost anything like, documents, PDFs, photos, Internet pages and Internet PDFs to an HP AirPrint enabled printer. You cannot ePrint Internet pages or Internet PDF files. AirPrinting occurs instantly. ePrinting has a slight delay before the job prints.
You can get around this feature by opening Internet PDF files like an owner's manual to an HP printer, in HP iPrint. This is a free app available for iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone. Then inside iPrint, you can email the PDF to your printer from anywhere in the world using WiFi. I enjoy recipe hunting on the Internet and this is a true advantage of AirPrint over ePrint. When you find the recipe, just print it straight from the Internet. You cannot do this with ePrint or HP iPrint. Another unique feature of AirPrint is double sided printing, to save on paper. ePrint does not allow double sided printing.
Photos look amazing when printing directly from the iPod Touch. Even photos taken from the iPod Touch look good. AirPrint does have a limitation. This is a feature that allows you to print while on the same WiFi network. So, if I travel to another part of the state, I cannot AirPrint to the home office. However, if the hotel has an AirPrint enabled printer then you can print to it. ePrinting is different.
Many HP printers and other brands offer ePrinting. This is a very cool feature that allows you to print from your iPod Touch 4th Gen to an ePrinter through email. Your ePrinter must be connected to a WiFi network and it is assign a specific email address. Then, while travelling on the road away from the home network, I can email a document or photo to the ePrinter's email address and viola, done. The limitation with ePrint is that not all applications will allow you to send an email from within the application. You cannot ePrint Internet pages or Internet PDFs. Only the Photosmart series comes with AirPrint in the firmware. The Officejet A series printers require a firmware upgrade. I did this in the initial installation process and it was very easy to perform. You cannot download the firmware from the HP website. I wasted 30 minutes trying to find it. You upgrade the firmware by accessing the user panel on the printer. Go to Setup Menu / Web Services / Product Update. === HP iPrint app for iPod Touch, iPad, iPhone ===
Another cool application is iPrint by HP. It is a free app for iPod devices and probably other android devices too, but not sure with those. iPrint will allow you to print photos, saved files like PDFs and direct printing from your iPod Touch or iPhone camera. I can really get all this with the AirPrint feature, so no big deal here.
iPrint differs in that you can directly scan documents and work files directly to a saved folder in your iPod device. You can then open, view, share, and print those scanned pages. They will automatically be saved as PDFs. Another feature is that you can wirelessly transfer files from your home network computer to your iPod device. Then you can open, share, and print those. For example, I can upload some recipes from home and share them with co-workers at the office. Do note that you won't be able to open word documents with file extension .doc or .docx. So, be sure to convert those files to PDFs before importing.
iPrint also seems like it would be very useful for android devices too, since it allows for options to be selected unlike ePrinting. In HP iPrint you can print grayscale or color, select your paper size, and choose double sided printing.=== HP 8500A vs. 8500A Plus ===
The most obvious difference between the two models is a larger LCD screen and a slightly larger ADF tray. The 8500A Plus holds 50 sheets compared to 35 on the 8500A. When looking at the specs, it is hard to see the differences. When I played with two machines at a local store there are several key features beyond the screen size.
The 8500A Plus has a full scale copy feature similar to what you would have with a $5000 copier at an office. It will perform the following key tasks:
1 sided to 2 sided
2 sided to 1 sided
2 sided to 2 sided
Printing can be done to short edge or long edge.
The 8500A would not copy 2 sided to 2 sided, which is the most common type of scanning and printing tasks that I perform. For this reason alone, I opted for the 8500A Plus. I did see a few other tasks that the 8500A Plus would perform over the 8500A, but I do not recall the details. === Summary ===
HP 8500A Plus is a step up from the 8500A, offering key features with printing and copying that will save you time and money, like 2 sided to 2 sided copies. Both of these printers will allow for ePrint, HP iPrint, and the highly beloved Apple AirPrint. Only the AirPrint feature will allow you to print directly from the Internet to an HP AirPrint enabled printer. All these features come with a reliable, high quality printer with high capacity ink cartridges for cost savings.

(More customer reviews)This is a great, commercial-quality machine for a small office. It is an upgrade of the LJ3100 and LJ3200. I had a LJ3100 and used and abused it for 5 years. This latest version is improved by addition of a flatbed copier/scanner. The paper feed has been re-designed into a flat stack that holds an entire ream, so that should eliminate the multiple-page feed problem that plagued earlier models. The duty cycle has been increased to 10,000 per month. The fax modem (in the 3330 model only) is faster, and fax resolution is improved.
The good news about the scanner is that it allows true color scans in a variety of resolutions. This is great if you want to email color jpegs. The (slightly) bad news about the scanner is that the increased functionality results in a slower operation. If the only thing you want to do is scan text into pdf files, this scanner (and the automatic document feed) are slower than the LJ3100 and LJ3200.
The only thing flat-out horrible about this thing is the HP software. HP doesn't give you the option to load only the drivers. You are forced to load absolutely gigantic "Document Manager" and "LaserJet Director" files that nobody would ever use, but which files are plugged into your msconfig and startup folders. It takes some messing around to clean up your computer after you load up the HP software, and HP doesn't allow you to uninstall features you'd never use.

I am very pleased with this except i wish they made longer lasting ink cartridges..it seems I am constantly buying cartridges and seeming not to be printing much out. another thing i could use is a flatbed scanner not a feed scanner. but still a great little machine.

The 7130 was an absolute piece of crap, and I had second thoughts about the 9110 as well, not having seen it in stores near me and thus being unable to test it. Finally, I got it delivered, and oh my, what a world apart it is from the 7130. HP must have fired the team responsible for the 7130 and brought in serious replacements -- the 9110 is a wondrous piece of equipment for serious users. I simply love it! Much easier to use, extremely silent, intelligent, faster; it's worth every single penny!
If you have bought any other all-in-one within the last couple of weeks, take it back, and get this one instead. You won't feel sorry, guaranteed!

(More customer reviews)Epson's Artisan's 725 turned out to be slightly less than what its name implies (all-in-one) and surprisingly more. It is less than what we normally call 'all-in-one' because a FAX send/receive capability is absent. I would say that it's 'more' because, for reasons known only to Epson, it is not advertised as also a 'photo printer' which it is and quite a good, feature-rich one at that.
Its small paper tray(s) and the absence of a scan/copier feeder make the Artisan a HOME printer. For anyone who doesn't absolutely need a FAX in a printer and who appreciates its 'photo' capabilities this Artisan can be the almost ideal printing device.INSTALLATION
I experienced near-zero issues while setting up the printer. The 'quick start' instructions were clear and, soon after the packaging materials were removed the printer was ready for use.
Once the printer is unpacked, the 6 ink cartridges are loaded and the tray is filled with paper - all done in a matter of minutes - the printer practically configured itself once we turned it on and told it that we spoke English. It quickly detected our Wi-Fi network and it configured itself to use it. Once it checked its print heads and made sure that they were clean and well aligned the first test page came out.
On the PC side we installed the drivers without any issues and loaded additional apps such as Easy PhotoPrint, Epson Scan and the user's manual. The only one that acted up was Epson Scan which was unable to detect the printer a couple of times but whatever problem it had in the beginning it seems to have been temporary because Scan works okay now.FEATURES
Once the printer is on, the front Control Panel provides full access to printer's features. Alternatively, most of printer's services, at least the ones that really matter can be controlled from any PC-based app that can access the installed driver.
The 2-tray claim is technically correct but in practice there is ONE paper tray plus a 'photo tray' on top of it that can hold up to 20 4x6" or 5x7" photo sheets. The actual paper tray can hold up to 120 letter, 8x10" or A4 sheets or up to 50 legal size sheets - as I noted already, this is definitely meant to be a HOME printer.
When it comes to connectivity, the Artisan did a good job at joining a Wi-Fi network. An Ethernet port is also available. Printer can be controlled either through the front panel or from another remote device on which the printer's driver was installed. The printer's front has ports for USB and SD memory cards. The USB port can be used not only to save or retrieve data from flash drives but also to charge whichever device would normally charge through a USB cable.
One interesting capability is Artisan's ability to print on CDs or DVDs. It's not quick or easy - it involves lifting the control panel, having some special CD tray extended and using dedicated Epson CD software but it worked. I was able to create my own, personalized CD label.
Another interesting and useful feature is the printer's ability to 'make black' when you just ran out of black ink but color ink is still available. This is something I wish I had on another printer some weekends ago when I HAD to have something printed and my 'other brand' machine simply refused to work because it was out of black ink.OPERATION
Printing

Can be initiated form a PC, a mobile device running software such as Epson iPrint or directly from connected flash drives or memory cards. Mac is supported but I wasn't able to test it myself. The most flexible option is, of course, printing from a PC or a Mac where you have full control over the output quality and any type of document or image can be sent to the printer.Copying and Scanning

Copying or scanning can be performed one sheet at a time - there is no loader - and you are limited to letter or A4 size (no legal).
As a copier/scanner, the Artisan can do B&W or color, single or 2-sided, can enlarge/reduce the copy size and adjust output quality. When it comes to photo copying, it's possible to revive old photos by restoring colors if faded and perform some basic image processing - adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, even take care of 'red eye' - with no need for dedicated software running on a PC. I found these capabilities interesting but I am not likely to use them. Both photo paper and ink are expensive and I prefer a device with a keyboard and a mouse when cropping a picture and a software application that allows me more flexibility and gives me the ability to get a hi-res preview of output when preparing an image for printing.
Scans can be output as a JPG or PDF. The printer has the ability to direct the output to a PC on the network and even launch the default email application. Alternatively, the output can be sent to a connected USB flash drive or a memory card.
While scanning can be performed through the printer's control panel alone, I prefer the Epson Scan software installed of my PC as the better option. It allows me to control the scan's quality, ranging from 'quick' to 'professional' and save the output on the PC.Other capabilities

From the control panel it's possible to print ruled paper. The menu offers a pretty good variety and the output is good. However... ink is expensive. As a variation to the 'ruled paper', it's possible to create personalized note paper with a scanned image in the background. Also through the control power and with some image in the scanner, you can use the 'coloring book' option to produce an outline that's ready for coloring.MY RATING
The Artisan 725 is definitely a HOME printer. Its small paper tray, lack of a paper loader and of a FAX capability do not qualify it as 'home business' equipment. However, as a home machine, I could hardly find major faults. It was easy to setup, it works well with my PCs, the output is reasonably quick and of good quality and the photos are nothing short of spectacular - my testing involved some high end Canon paper and the highest quality settings - and the ink appears to be reasonably priced. The numerous photo printing capabilities available from the control panel are okay but not likely to be used although it does not hurt to have them there. Same about the printer's ability to print rule paper, it doesn't hurt to have it and it may prove itself to be a lifesaver some day. The printer's ability to 'make' black ink out of colored ink when it ran out of black is as definite plus.
As a home almost-all-in-one AND photo printer, this is a five-star.

When operated with a new printhead, the 901 printer prints beautifully and performs its functions as advertised. However, before the first cartridges were fully used (within the first 2-3 months of purchase) two of the color inks clogged the printhead. No amount of running deep cleaning utilities would clear the clogs. The optional light swab as described in help also did not clear the clogs, and the printhead was functionally unusable. This is where the fun starts. In November, 2010,Lexmark made available its 100 series printhead (part # 14N1339) for purchase at its web site, along with ink, as a supply. I was warned of a back-order and I patiently waited a month without complaint for a new printhead. It arrived, I installed the new printhead and for the moment it is working beautifully again. Expecting a recurring problem, I tried to order a back-up for inventory. The web-site now instructs that an 800 number must be called. After waiting my turn, I was told that Lexmark will NOT accept ANY orders to purchase that replacement printhead. I was not given any explanation, nor any hope that the printhead will ever be available for purchase again. My statement that I was perfectly willing to wait months did not sway Lexmark. I was told to search for vendors who might have one left in stock. I wasted my time, and found none. Other than the 901 and 905, I do not know whether the same printhead is used in other inkjet printers. It is simply astonishing that Lexmark is continuing to sell printer models, with the knowledge that a printhead is likely to fail but no replacements will be sold. Even if I was given some explanation of a change in manufacturing sources, it would be somewhat understandable, but Lexmark has offered no explanation. Elsewhere in the reviews on Amazon for the 901 printer, a Lexmark employee suggested that the reviewer contact him. I tried the same address and received no response. I regret that I did not ship this printer back to Lexmark when the first printhead failed. Lexmark has not only created questions of credibility and reliability, but more serious questions about its liability for continuing to sell a product for which it refuses to supply replacement parts. There are serious questions about the representations of Lexmark concerning the fitness of any and all printers utilizing the series 100 printhead, for its expected and intended use. My recommendation is that no one buy any Lexmark printers using the printhead series 100 part 14N1339 until Lexmark explains its refusal to sell replacement printheads, and its proposed remedies.

I have Brother MFC 7340 printer (which was not in the compatibility list!!) and its scanning and printing nice and fast. Two PCs (a desktop and a laptop) are connected wirelessly to the router, and the print server is wired to the router. Everything is working fine. Both PCs are running windows vista.
I had to install the printer software to each pc separately. Then I installed the print server and things were good to go!!!
Highly recommended!!! Cheap!!! easy to install!!!

1. The automatic paper feeder is well designed - the situation that multiple pages go-through at once never happens (in HP 3050, this happens a lot).
2. Canon provided a well designed user interface - functions are easy to follow and operate, including scan / printer / copy.
3. The automatic duplex print is excellent and make the printer worth what you paid for. But when using automatic double sided printing - the print speed turns to be less than a third (instead a half) because the mechanical parts need a lot of time to flip the paper.
4. As some of you may have concerned, the latest firmware (02/09/2009) makes scan function smooth on a Mac - all you need is to press the scan button. This is tested on a Leopard Mac Mini.
5. In case some of you want know the compatibility with printer servers, this printer is full compatible with Netgear PS121 printer server under windows vista (including automatic duplex) x86 and x64. It is NOT compatible with Netgear PS121 under Mac Leopard (no idea why - installation smooth and prints went through - nothing comes out of printer). This printer is NOT compatible with Maxtor Central Axis printer server function.
To summary, this is a good printer for its price. However, concerning its powerful function, you may want spend some extra money for the 4370n to enable every function on network - if you are working in a networked environment.

One reason was because the ink was too expensive and the Kodak seemed like a bargain because of the cheaper ink it offered. The black cartridge will run you $[...] and the color $[...]. I was paying around $[...] prior on ink. Making the total cost for the printer and ink around $165.00. BUT WHAT THEY DON'T TELL YOU is that this printer will only print those superior pictures on Kodak paper. It has a built in scanner that scans the back of the photo paper and automatically sets the image quality. The photo paper will run you around $9.00 bucks for regular glossy (4x6 @ 100 sheets)or the premium quality runs around the same price but you only get 60 4x6 sheets. (premium is better as it is heavier paper and doesn't fold as badly as the regular ones) Forget about using cheaper or other brands of photo paper, Kodak makes it so that they come out horrible. NOT ONLY is that a way to corner the market and make up for the cheap cost of the ink, one very very bad con is that you can forget about using regular non-photo paper. For black and white documents it's acceptable but color pictures are horrible on regular paper. Again Kodak offers something called ULTIMATE PAPER that makes the color quality acceptable. I tried using three different types of paper and only the Kodak paper was acceptable and not really good crisp bright color quality. My HP 500 was way better. This printer works as if it's already built in to work on it's own accessories and nothing else. This printer does not let you control the quality at all. It's set to AUTO PAPER even though i'm using an ultra bright white non kodak brand it will not let you adjust the type of paper you are using. So if you think that this printer is a simple easier way to go...think twice about it. For me since I like to print color copies on non-photo paper way more than print pictures I pretty much hate it because i'm limited on only using the Kodak Photo paper which is more expensive than other brands. The machine IS loud and when the paper comes out is bends, curls, or folds because the ink dries slowly on the regular paper. So expect to pay alot more for the accessories that does not come with this product because it pretty much rules out trying to use cheaper other brands. A side note: I also hate the paper tray because it's all black and makes it hard to load and the flap that holds it in place is very flimsy as if it's going to break off.
UPDATE:
Since my initial post it's unanimous: THIS IS THE WORST PRINTER EVER. I'm going to take it out in the yard and destroy it with a mallot and put it on youtube. Since I last wrote this review (I've had more time to play with it) I've had to call customer service and get new printer heads...TWICE. I just got my second printer head today and because it went out it drained the newly bought ink while I was doing their diagnostics. So now they tell me they'll have to send new ink for it tomorrow even though I had told them that it looked like it had drained the ink they said it would go back to normal. The problem was that the printer head could not detect the ink levels. I've been out of a printer for two weeks because of this. Now another day. Also when you can get customer service everytime I called I got someone from another country and you couldn't understand what they were saying half the time. It got so bad I asked them if they could tell me if there is a Kodak model other than this one that no one had many complaints on, they couldn't give me one. Also to reply to the man who said he didn't understand why I would do this and do that, it's because I use regular paper indstead of photo paper to save on the space for book scrapping, like it's really any of his business what I do with my own paper anyway. BEWARE BEWARE go with lexmark or an hp.

(More customer reviews)I have now been using this printer/scanner for over two weeks. This replaces an old HP multifunction device which had problems with my Mac when printing over the network.
I work from home and have several computers running, Vista, XP and OSX and wanted them to share a printer/scanner. I must admit the driver setup is not the cleanest, and I needed to download versions newer than on the supplied disk to enable printing from 64bit applications on the mac. The only setup I got stuck on was that it is not clear that you need to have the printer connected by USB to create the initial connection to a secure wi-fi network.
Now that its up an running it works a dream enabling me to print and scan from any computer anywhere in the house. The scanning is decent (I don't have a huge quality need, but I can't complain about anything I've scanned), the printing is stunning. Colors are accurate for photos and the double sided printing is a great paper saver for general printing.
The only things which I feel could improve this device, for my purposes, are a document feeder for bulk scanning and a built in fax capability.

(More customer reviews)After my HP laser printer died, our small office needed a laser combination printer-copier that was inexpensive to maintain and highly reliable. Totally unknown to me prior to study: AIO or MFC searches will frequently bring up only printer combos that include all 4 functions: print, copy, scan, and fax.
After an extended search produced poor options, I discovered the DCP line which includes 3 of the 4 functions, dropping only the fax. This one difference from the MFC line meant far faster copy speeds, better quality printing and copying, and generally better quality all around on the 3 functions it performs.
The DCP-8080DN can be connected to a computer by USB and other means; can be networked in a LAN; will copy as a stand-alone (using ADF or manual feed); comes with a full-sized toner cartridge (for est. 15,000 pages) rather than the skimpy initial toner with others. Toner is available in high-yield size that makes cost between 1-2 cents per page, so reasonable consumables. When added to initial purchase price of $330, the initial and long term costs are manageable.
Yes, it is somewhat large but it's proving its value already. No more need for separate copier. It's completely silent when not in use and starts up pretty quickly. When printing, after warm up of maybe 12 seconds, pages pump out at the fastest rate I have ever seen for a small office laser printer. Seems the specs say 30 ppm, and it seems to be printing @ this rate. Copy speed is only slightly less fast. It will copy and print in duplex (2 sided) but speeds are considerably slower than printing/copying 2 separate pages.
Scanning is excellent, with capacity to scan to email, and also includes an OCR software Presto Page Manager 7.18, which works well. We already have a Scansnap for scanning, so we won't use scanning often.
Faxing is on the way out, with sheet feed scanning to pdf and emailing sufficing quite nicely.
We paid $330 on Amazon, used Prime for free, fast shipping, and it was here in 2 days. Set-up was fast and easy. Its Quick Set-Up documentation could serve as a model for other companies. (What a relief, too!) Works great with both Apple-Mac and PCs.
Brother should do a better job in distinguishing and marketing this DCP line. I only accidentally bumped into it, yet it offers several models for a range of prices. Finally, a multi-function printer that does not degrade printing because the unit adds copying and scanning.

Brother MFC-210C Color Inkjet Multifunction Printer Review

(More customer reviews)I got this today and I'm returning it tomorrow. The printer part is fine, but I do a lot of scanning and I am dumbfounded by what I discovered with this aspect of the machine. First off, when scanning you don't get a preview, you have no option of controlling the size of the scan, or the HSL or any other color/brightness control, nor can you control the dpi. You push the scan button and it scans the whole bed. If your object is smaller than the bed size, too bad. If you want something at 72 dpi (which is all any monitor can "see" so all you use for the web), too bad. If the colors aren't good, too bad. If there's a glare off of something you're scanning, too bad. No options are available. The files end up being large as they're the size of the bed and at 300dpi (the default).
When I first tried scanning and didn't get a preview window or any controls, I picked up the manual to figure out what was going wrong. Guess what? no mention of scanning in the 200 page book. When I looked "scanning" up in the index, it told me to look on the cd. When I looked on the cd, nothing. I went to Brother's site and downloaded a manual from there--only to read that you don't get any options on any part of scanning!

(More customer reviews)There are two problems with this printer and the other Epson CX models. First, the printer will not operate if any ink cartridge is empty. If the black cartridge is full, and any other cartridge is empty it will not operate even if you want to print in black only.
Second, these models have a tendency to clog from ink residue if you don't run cleaning cycles after each use, which exhaust your ink supply. This is a complete waste of ink and an expensive maintenance issue.

Canon imageCLASS MF3240 Monochrome Laser All-in-One Printer Review

(More customer reviews)I bought the Canon imageCLASS MF3240 about a month ago, and so far it has exceeded my expectations. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who is in the market for a multifunction device without the need to print in color. If you prefer getting your digital photos printed by an online or in-store photo processor, a laser multifunction is usually the way to go -- since it's a lower cost per page, it's faster, and the output is better quality than an inkjet.
APPEARANCE/CONSTRUCTION:
You can tell that it's a sub-$200 machine by the construction. Don't expect the same kind of solid feel that you'll get from a much more expensive piece of equipment. A few of the plastic parts feel a little flimsy, like the paper tray. But they all seem to work fine, and I don't have any concerns about durability. Unless you're really tough on your office equipment, you should be ok.
The MF3240 isn't the sexiest looking multifunction out there (if you're looking for a great looking device, try the Canon PIXMA MP830, which uses inkjet technology so you can print in color too). In fact, it kind of looks like a cooler sitting on the desk. But the buttons are laid out logically on the keypad, and from the investigating I've done into a lot of different multifunction devices, the footprint on this one seems to be a reasonable size.
PERFORMANCE:
So far, so good. If you're really a stickler for the highest output possible -- if you need the most crisp, darkest text and flawless images -- this probably isn't the machine for you. Don't get me wrong...the output is very good, borderline excellent. But you can tell that it wasn't printed on a $1,000 heavy-duty laser printer.
This baby is fast! Total time for the first page to arrive in my hand after clicking the Print button (including warmup time) was 13 seconds. It's considerably faster warming up than my old HP laser printer.
It's not the quietest machine I've ever heard, but I wouldn't call it too loud either.
It has a toner saver mode, but I'd call this an annoyance. You're supposed to be able to set the toner saver either directly on the printer control panel or through the printer driver. I've tried a number of times to set up two profiles: one that uses toner saver and another that doesn't. It works sometimes, but other times it'll end up in the wrong mode. Even when I get it to work, I don't notice much of a difference in output between toner saver mode and the regular mode.
I've also been having a minor problem with the fax. I have the MF3240 hooked up to my phone line, and a phone extension hooked into the fax machine. The fax machine is set in Manual mode, so it shouldn't do anything unless I take action on my own. But I've had one or two phone calls on the extension that's hooked up to the fax where the machine hangs up on the person I'm talking to after about 10 minutes! If I can't get this problem to stop, I may end up getting a splitter for the phone line and hooking the phone extension into the line separately.
SOFTWARE:
It comes bundled with a light version of OCR software. I tried it once, and it seemed to recognize every single word on the page I scanned. I was quite impressed -- much better than older versions of OCR I've tried (although I must admit this is the first OCR software I've tried in at least 6-7 years, so I'm sure the technology is much better now).
It also installs a piece of software called Canon Multifunction Toolbox 4.9. This is the most pleasant surprise I've experienced with this printer so far. It allows you to click one button, go through a couple simple settings, and then get a scan and go straight to an e-mail, or straight to a PDF, etc. The smartest feature is that it allows you to pick a target file size, and it'll adjust the resolution to achieve that file size. So it eliminates trying to scan something and then finding out the resulting file is 20MB, then needing to go back and re-scan it at a lower resolution before you e-mail it. You simply pick your target file size (let's say 1MB) and the software will scan your document at the proper resolution to achieve that file size. Very smart!
OVERALL:
Amazon has even knocked ten dollars off the price since I bought it...now it's going for about one hundred fifty bucks...so it's an even better value today. This is a very good multifunction device for light/moderate home or home office use. Given the chance to do it all over, I'd definitely buy the MF3240 again.
UPDATE 9/2010: The Canon Multifunction Toolbox software doesn't work with Windows 7. It's not a huge problem, since you can still use all the main functions of the machine. But you will lose a little functionality, such as the one-touch scanning capability.

Installation went very somoothly, and I disabled my anti-virus program as recommended in the instructions. Set up was easy, and I was up and running in about 15 minutes. The printer controls are very intuitive, and my wife had no trouble doing her first scan for a craft project. The copy feature is especially handy, and I was able to make very acceptable copies of some insurance forms. We sent a test fax and it went through very easily. Ink was easy to install, and I am satisifed with the color and clarity of the print. Print speed is good. I plan to try the photo cartridge at a later date.
The most impressive feature of this printer is how well it is built. I compared the x8350 to several HP and Canon models, and was most impressed with the Lexmark quality; e.g. the paper tray is rock solid compared to the two other brands. This is a great all-in-one printer for the money. (the model I purchased did not have a USB cable included).

(More customer reviews)I purchased the Brother MFC-685CW before there were any reviews for it. It was a toss up between the cheaper Brother MFC-665CW and the more expensive Brother MFC-885CW. I went to the Brother website to do a side by side comparison of the 3 printers and I found that the Brother MFC-685CW and the Brother MFC-885CW were almost identical in every way so I decided to get the MFC-685 because the price was right. Though I was wary because like I said there were no reviews for it. I must tell you, I don't regret getting this printer at all. It was a lot smaller than the gigantic Canon Pixma MP530 printer I was replacing. Getting rid of the old printer and getting this one in its place really freed up a lot of space on my desk. Because of it's size, I'm able to position the printer anyway I want now. Though it's a bit heavy, that's not a problem because I don't have to pick it up too often. The other reviewer said the printer is intended to be left on all the time. No it's not. I turn mine off whenever I turn my computer off or when I don't need it. There's no problem and all my settings are always the same no matter how many times I turn the product on or off. He also said that this model is around 3 years old. Amazon and his info is wrong because this model came out last year. But I do agree with most of his other points though ;o).
Now for the important stuff, the features. I think this printer is great. There's a bit of a learning curve to figure out some of the features and somethings you may have to refer to the manual in order to use them until you familiarize yourself with the printer. I made sure I used all of the functions of this printer and everything works well. The Brother MFC-685CW has a lot of positives but this product is not perfect so of course it has some negatives.
Positives:
- One of the smallest All-in-Ones that I've ever seen
- All the controls are in the front. You don't have to get up out of your chair to do anything. Everything is at your fingertips. No reaching around the side, back or inside of the printer to do anything. My favorite fingertip feature, being able to change the ink from the front without have to lift up the lid and reach inside the interior of the printer. To change the ink all you have to do is open the cap in the front, pop the ink in and that's it.
- It's wireless. I've got my laptop hooked up to this printer wirelessly and it prints out flawlessly just as if it were connected to the printer directly. The setup was pretty easy. Everything took about 10 minutes or so.
- I like that there's a speaker phone so that you don't have to pick up the receiver when sending or receiving a fax.
- The corded handset and it's base can be removed from the printer entirely, making the printer's width even smaller. The printer comes with
an extra cap that you can place on the spot where the handset and the base were removed so that it looks like they were never there. Very cool.
- It takes most types of media cards so if you don't want to hook up your camera via USB cable and you would rather take out your media card and view and print your pictures that way, you can.
- The printer has a color screen, which is especially useful when you put in your media card and you want to view or make any adjustments to your photos before you print them.
- You can preview your fax before sending or receiving it.
- Prints documents almost immediately. No long thinking or waiting time.
- You can use LC51 compatible inks. You don't have to use Brother's. The ink monitor recognizes them as the official inks.
- Printing with the black ink could be a tad bit sharper but it's still nice. This also all depends on the type of paper you use and the print settings. I've printed photos and they come out quite nice on this printer. The heavier the paper you print on, the better your prints. I would recommend 24lbs(standard inkjet paper weight) or higher. Though printing on 20lbs. is decent.
- The speed depending also on the print settings is pretty fast. The speed on "Normal" printing could be a little faster. I have my printer
set to "Normal Fast", I have "Slow Drying Paper" checked, and I also adjusted the "Color Enhancement" settings, in order to get nice prints
from this setting. If you don't do this, the prints at the "Normal Fast" setting aren't that great. Set at "Normal Fast", my prints come out in a flash.
- Ink monitor is placed in the taskbar of your computer so that you can always check your ink status.
Negatives:
- No duplex printing. No worries if you, like me, don't use this feature too often.
- A little weird and cumbersome putting in 4x6 photo paper. It's not a matter of opening or taking out the tray and putting in the photo paper. It involves a lot of maneuvering and adjusting when in reality it should not be so complicated.
- Printing photos is slow and the photo quality is not all that great. Photos appear dull and dark and not vivid at all. I've tried various settings from using the default factory setting to manually adjusting the settings, still no luck. Unless my printer is defective, this what I'm experiencing.
- The ink monitor is not 100% accurate and not that smart. I found that sometimes when I take out any one of the inks cartridges, even if it's half full, put it back in and it asks you on the printer screen if you just put in a new cartridge and you said that you did, it will register the cartridge as being new ink. This is very bad because I never know when I'm going to run out of ink because the monitor is incorrect. Capping off this fact is that Brother cartridges are all enclosed and not clear so you can't even look at the cartridge to know how much ink you really have unlike say, a Canon ink cartridge. Canon cartridges are clear so you can tell you're out of ink without the help of an ink monitor.
All in all, I really like the Brother MFC-685CW and I'm glad I decided to purchase it. It's attractive looking, pretty easy to use and very compact for an All in One. I've always used the Brother faxes but was a little wary about getting a printer from them but I've been very please so far. I was a Canon printer lover but after my previous Canon flaked out on me, I decided to give Brother a try and I'm glad I did.

(More customer reviews)This is a product that has shown me that at least if nothing else Lexmark has good customer support. We have had multiple issues with this printer. First off, it jams very easily when feeding papers. After continuing this problem for a month, I called Lexmark and they sent a replacement. The replacement had the exact same issues as the original. Clearly, its a flaw in the model and not the particular machine we had. This second machine also developed a problem with its motherboard. Lexmark sent technicians out twice to fix the problem and eventually got the problem resolved. Two weeks after they fixed that problem, the machine started ripping up papers that were being fed to it. This thing has been a disaster since day one. I would never recommend it to anyone.

(More customer reviews)I bought this Brother printer to replace an HP 2840 color laser. I like the Brother. It's smaller and quieter. It doesn't have to calibrate a couple times a day either. Scans are way faster than the HP and the scan quality if far better than the HP. Copies and printing are great, as expected. I don't ever fax so I can't address it's capabilities there.
I found one limitation with this printer that prevented me from giving it five stars. The printer can only be used as a network printer attached to the router via an Ethernet cable or it can be a workstation printer supporting one PC attached via a USB cable. If your using Windows networking to share the printer (i.e. it's connected to one PC via USB and enabled for print sharing), it's not supported. What? You got it. Brother won't let you share the printer other than to have it setup as a network printer attached to the router.
This is an issue if, like me, the router is nowhere near the printer and you want to do a lot of scanning using the PC based utilities vs. the little screen on the printer. You can scan with it as a network printer but you can only do it using the function keys on the printer itself. You lose the benefits of the PC software based approach. If you do any volume of scanning, you want the PC utilities enabled.
I was able to work around the problem and get it working like I wanted but it took a couple days working on and off to sort out. I called Brother technical support. They kindly told me the printer doesn't support what I wanted to do and I should return the product. What? Unbelievable!!
To get it to work as a shared USB attached printer, you have to go through the CD install process on each PC. That's okay once you understand that's the process.
The only remaining limitation is quickly setting up a temporary shared user. Say your brother-in-law is in town for the weekend and needs to print. He can't use the Windows "Add a printer" function and get to your Brother printer. You have to go find the CD and do a full install for your brother-in-law to print his Mapquest directions home. It's not a huge problem but Brother should not have designed it this way.

I have been using the printer for 6 months and need to replace the black, so I am happy with the ink usage. The paper handling may not be perfect but it is way better than the last HP I had and has never jammed on me. I haven't tried printing photos because that is not why I bought it. I have a Canon I use for that.
The poster that indicated he had to enable file and printer sharing is not correct. I just hook it to my router and any computer in my home I install the driver on can use the printer.
For the price it is a great all in one. It prints very quickly, receives and sends faxes in record time. I am very happy. Buy it.

(More customer reviews)I had an HP Fax 1010 for my home office, and it was a trouper - always worked great. But then HP had a recall due to potential fire hazard, and offered a rebate on several of their faxes and multifunction fax/printer/scanners.
So I went for the M1391F MFP. I don't really care about printing - I've got a color duplex laser printer for that. I wanted something that would fax, copy, and scan with an auto-feed.
Here's what it's good at:
1. Scanning letter-size pages (although their Mac software could use some work).
2. Copying letter-size pages.
3. Faxing letter-size pages to U.S. recipients.
And the document feed works great.
Here's what it won't do:
1. Scan legal-sized pages
2. Ring or make any kind of noise when it gets an incoming call, from a fax machine, cell phone, or land line. Even with all the volume settings turned to high.
3. Receive an incoming fax or phone call. At all. From anywhere.
The capper tonight was that I had to fax a time-sensitive document to New Zealand, and this piece of work thinks the NZ dial tone is a busy signal and won't connect.
I tried to access HP's live chat help desk, but nobody picked up in over a half-hour. So now I'm having an extended, hours-between-installments email correspondence with Nigel from Bangalore, and he's asking me to verify the model number and what version of Windows is on the attached computer and am I using USB. Well, there is no computer attached, Nigel, I'm using this as a detached fax machine. But as someone who's written printer drivers for your own company's printers, and fax software for your competitors, I can assure you that if the attached computer is preventing this unit from receiving faxes or recognizing international dial tones, you need to look for another job.
I dug out the old 1010 and it sent the fax just fine.
This unit has a wonderful feature set. If only it worked. It's useless to me, and I'm going to have to start looking for a fax machine that works.
When I was in grad school over 20 years ago, HP sold the best lab equipment money could buy. You knew if you got an HP gas chromatograph, or infrared spectrometer, or oscilloscope, you had the highest quality available on the planet.
Now... I've bought probably a dozen HP laser printers since 1990, and never even looked at another brand, with one costing over $10,000. But after this hunk of junk, I will certainly look at alternatives in the future.

(More customer reviews)I bought this printer one month back, it is definately a good printer with a decent price. The one thing I feel is that it uses a lot of ink.
This is my first printer ever though so I do not know if all the printers do that but, I finished one cartridge of Black ink in 2 weeks and I do not use very often and as much as possible use the low ink mode. I was surprised to see how soon it got used up.
One more thing is that the cartridge for this model of printer is not that freely available and it is very difficult to find good deals for these cartridges as opposed to other models like 4800 or 4600.
Last advice, if you have an option, buy a different model of epson printer.
Ah!! one more thing Epson customer serivice is very rude and they would not budge an inch. If you are a no nonsense person please stay away from epson.

HP Deskjet 3050 All-in-One Printer (CH376A#B1H) Review

(More customer reviews)I needed to replace an old HP deskjet that I've had for more than 5 years that finally decided to stop working properly. I did a lot of research online and quickly got very caught up with all of these massive all-in-one devices that had way more functionality than I would ever need. If you are like me and just need a home printer to print the occasional directions/maps, recipes, coupons, bills, etc., then this is definitely the printer for you.
Before you buy a printer online you need to go to a store and see just how large these all-in-one devices actually are. My wife took one look at them and told me there is no way that is going in our home office even if it also served as a micro fridge and coffee maker. The great thing about this HP 3050 is that it has a much smaller footprint than most all-in-one printers. It has print, copy, and scan functionality, but no fax. Who needs a fax these days anyways when you can just scan a file and then email the scanned document. Most devices don't have a fax out capability anyways so unless you are operating a business out of your house and you receive a lot of faxes the lack of fax on this model should not be a problem.
The printer is not too heavy and it's packaged really well in the box. Instead of being wrapped in styrofoam it is secured with recycled cardboard and wrapped in a reusable canvas bag that you can use for your groceries. It comes with a quick installation guide, as most HP printers do, and the set up went very smoothly with no problems. There is one piece of cardboard wedged inside near the ink cartridges that I missed, but the printer told me of my error and it was easy enough to remove.
Setting up wireless was also not a problem, but you will need to be familiar with your wireless network security settings in order to get the printer connected. An alternative is just using the USB cable, which is nicely included in the box. I haven't played around with web printing yet, but it's not hard to just plug the USB cable into my desktop or laptop and print what I need.
The only negative I can think of is that the printing is a bit loud, but unless you're keeping the printer in the room with the baby crib the noise isn't THAT loud that it would be a dealbreaker. Ink consumption so far is not noticeably different than my prior HP, but I don't print all that much all that often so this is tough to measure for me.
Overall a high quality printer with all the functionality non business users would need with a smaller footprint and lower price tag than most other all-in-one printers.

(More customer reviews)OK, I would actually go for more of a 3 1/2 star rather than a 3 or 4. (UPDATE: I would go with more of a 4 1/2 after a week of use and getting used to how this works and figuring in how it fits into the home.)
First off this is a home device. This is not something that you want for an office. That being said, if you have it in your mind that this is a device for the home, then your perceptions of this will change.
Also this a hybrid device, so as such, you really have to look at each part and see if they are worth it.
The printer sans touchscreen. The printer itself can be used to Scan, Copy and Print, all wirelessly, and with a built in double sided printing module. The prints seem to look good and it prints fast. Photo prints looked fairly good as well. Replacement ink cartridges run around $10 for the regular capacity (bout 300 prints) to around $27 for the XL (about 750 prints). I do like that each color has its own cartridge so you only need to replace what you run out of. I can even use the HP iPrint app on my iPod touch and print PDFs, and photos from there. I can also scan directly to the iPod using the App. When Apple does the Airprint in the new iOS 4.2 it should also support printing from many more apps. What was especially neat was that when I used Docs to Go and choose to open a PDF from there in the iPrint app, I could print it. The printer also has the ability to use the ePrint feature without the tablet, which enables just about anything sent to a specific email address for your printer to print. Say you were at a local hotspot reading an article that lets you email it to somebody . . you need to go and want a copy of the article for some reason . . just email it to your printer and when you get home it will be there in the paper tray waiting when you get home. Overall, I would compare this to other $200 to $250 dollar printers out there for this functionality. However while I'm doing all this, somebody could be using the tablet to browse the web.
Which leads to a brief review of the tablet itself. Now I've used an iPad and let me tell you this is no iPad. That being said, a better comparison would be other $150 android based tablets out there that are this size. (UPDATE: I would compare this more with a NOOK with some extra bells and whistles - I talked to a manager at the local staples about it. He stated that he was just at a conference where the HP rep indicated it would have more android capabilities towards the first part of 2011).
It has the standard Android buttons, headphone jack, volume up and down, power, a mini USB port, and SD card slot. The screen is like that of an iPod or iPad in that it is based on the touch receptive glass (not sure of the fancy technical name for this). Yahoo and Barns & Noble must have paid a bundle as it is very centric to them, which is a annoying at first, but you can actually remove or at least hide some of this by customizing your home screens and favorite apps. Also if you start thinking of it as a 7" Nook with some extras then you'll be happier. Fortunately there is a generic email client under the hood so that you can set it up with something other than Yahoo Mail (almost returned it right there). I have it set up for both my wife's and my Gmail accounts and we can switch accounts easily to see our mail. There are a handful of apps built in that are nice such as QuickOffice for viewing MS Office files (no editing tho) and PDFs. There's also a calculator, web browser, RSS News feader (limited though),and a Facebook app that I like better than the one on my iPod Touch. There are also a number of other apps that are not the Print Apps. I Would like to see a Twitter App, and a YouTube App as well as some simple games like Sudoku, or even a (cough cough) a Kindle App.
HP has it's own custom Android skin and you can only download apps that it has listed. Most of which are the ePrint Apps as they call them. There are lots of these for all the different holidays, kids activities, recipes, etc. When you consider this a home device, these apps can be nice to quickly print off an activity for the kids to do if they are driving you nuts and none of the coloring books you have are good enough for them as . . oh sorry . . .let me get back on focus. I've never been a big facebook user, mostly as I don't care enough to take the time to turn on my computer and I don't care for the app on the iPod. I've actually check my facebook a couple of times this weekend and even replied to my sister for once. Anyway. the device can be a bit sluggish when using the web browser or news headline apps, but seems fairly responsive in the email, facebook, reading ebooks, and eprint apps. You can also print from the device when it's not docked, and control scanning as well. By the way, YES you can scan photos directly to an inserted SD card slot. This can be handy when grandma comes by with photos she's taken and didn't think about getting you a copy or getting you the digital file. Just pop'em in and scan them to the SD card. No need to turn on the computer.
When the tablet is connect you can then do eFax as well. No remember this is a HOME device and not an office device. Because you can send/receive 20 faxed pages per month for free. After that you can still do more, but there is a charge for it. That being said, in the past 2 years I've rarely sent or received and faxes. Only when we were taking advantage of the lower rates and decided to refinance our house. I probably went over, but there is no phone line where we have our printers set up and with the previous print/scan/copy/fax, I would have to pull a very taut phone line to it, make sure the kids weren't anywhere around to run it to the line and knock it all over, and pray that it would work. For me the 20 page monthly limit of efax is a non issue and is actually a plus. (UPDATE: I was also looking at Windows 7 and there is a built in fax application there. I can plug my laptop into a phone line and scan wireless the documents as a PDF and attach them to the fax. I little bit more fuss than using a doc feeder as you scan each page separately BUT that's all I really need.)
Would I buy this for an office? Absolutely NO.
Would I buy this again for the home? Probably. Mind you, I've only had this two days. I like what I've seen so far, but I still feel guilty about spending this much money. It is really cool tho. (UPDATE: Yes I would buy it again, provided I like the idea of getting a bundle of the Printer with essentially a powered up Nook with some extra capabilities.)
(UPDATE: After using the printer several days I was having a problem with ePrint from HP saying that the printer wasn't connected for email printing even though everything worked in my house. After reading the forums, I ended up disabling the power saver using the IP address for the printer in my home network. Then turning the printer itself (not the Zeen) off then back on and it has been up and running since. Seems like this is a problem with the printer going to sleep and HP's servers not being able to wake it up to print remotely. But I have it working now so that's a relief. Seems this a problem that effects ALL the HP printers capable of ePrinting and is not specifically a problem with this printer.)

(More customer reviews)Like most people, I wanted an all-in-one to replace a stack of machines: an ancient parallel-port scanner, a nearly ancient fax that prints with thermal paper, and the free printer I got from my last PC. After using this model for a few months, I find it does much of what I want.
I like the ability to scan documents to files for achiving and the scanning of multiple pictures into seperate files.
I suppose I shouldn't complain much for a machine at this price point, but it has several drawbacks:
(1) After running about 200 pages through the fax/scanner page feeder, my fed pages now show up with a line through them. Documentation says to clean the small scan window (which I did to no effect). Otherwise, you're out of luck. Flatbed scanning does not show the line.
(2) Regadless of which scanner you use, the printer adds small margins to each page. If you're printing a document with no margins, it will cut off the edges.
(3) Unlike even the cheap printers bundled with my last two PCs, this one has no wake-on-network capability (that is, since it site in my office, if it's turned off and I want to print, I have to walk over to turn it on). In fact, if something is stuck in the queue and I try to print a second document, it hangs my system.
(4)Like most HP products at the bottom of the cost curve, it feels flimsy. Every time I open the cover, it feels like it's going to fall off.

(More customer reviews)I was looking for an All In One and bought this because of the connectivity options and Epson reputation. This is actually the CX9400fax sold with an external third party printer server that velcros to the back of the machine. The server has an antennae for wireless 'g' and an ethernet connection as well. The server connects to the machine with a usb cable. Out of the box two of the four cartridges were defective. The Epson software installed without a problem and worked flawlessly when connected directly to the computer through the usb port. The ethernet connection also worked fine through my router. However; with Epson support I was never able to get the wireless connection to work. After 2 1/2 hours with Epson they were still willing to assist but by then I was ready to throw in the towel. They were somewhat helpful but it became apparent there are some bugs to work out. And then there are the typical tech issues you hear so much about. Told that the tech would get back with me in 2-3 minutes but it's 30. Told they would call me back and didn't. Personally I think this machine was rushed to market and wish Epson had taken more time to develop the product including improving the printer server installation software and making the wifi and ethernet connections 'built in'. I ended up sending mine back to Epson and purchasing an HP. As a footnote they refused to reimburse me for the replacement cartridges I had to purchase to overcome the two defective ones that accompanied the machine. If there comes a time in my life where I have forgotten I wrote this review that is when I will purchase another Epson.

Canon imageCLASS MF4370DN Laser All-in-One Printer Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this about a week ago and have been using it ever since. I have a Mac and finding a multifunction unit that is Mac compatible hasn't been easy. This unit, the MF4370DN, works great with my Mac. The lower models, the MF4350D and the MF4150D are NOT completely Mac compatible.
I couldn't find any reviews for this item - so I will tell you everything I can about it.
I know there is some comparable Brother models out there, but have heard they surge the power in the room. I haven't tested them, but I have a Brother laser printer and it makes all the lights in my home office dim when it gets ready to print. Also that model doesn't duplex print (print/copy on both sides of the page. The MF4370DN does.)
This unit works great with my Mac - it scans, prints, copies, and receives faxes. I originally bought the Canon MF4350d which despite all the information I read is not entirely mac compatible, its scanner is not compatible with Macs, which was confirmed for me by talking with a Canon rep. It would be nice if they mentioned that on their website specs instead of wasting hours of my time and then having to drive 70 miles to return it. (I didn't buy it from Amazon because they didn't have it at the time.)
Canon support told me the MF4370dn is entirely mac compatible - just hit the Scanner button on it twice so it is in "USB SCANNING MODE."
Overall I'm pretty happy with this unit. The print quality is great, the faxing speed and quality is much faster than my old thermal fax. The copier works great. The scan quality off the glass is great. The duplexing feature works great. Unit is very, very quiet - in fact I can't hear it when it's on or sleeping.
Now I can finally get rid of three bulky devices - my fax, laser printer, and scanner, and replace it with this one unit.
Cons:
1) No software comes with this unit that allows you to create a single PDF from the Auto Document Feeder. So if I wanted to scan 10 pages through the feeder and create a single PDF it can't do it. It would create 10 different documents in your scanning program, then you would have to save each one as a PDF and use another program to create a single PDF. After hours of research I discovered Acrobat Professional can create a single PDF directly off the auto document feeder. Acrobat Professional is an expensive program at $449 which is available for Mac. I happen to have it and used it successfully to create a multipage pdf. On Acrobat Professional you go to FILE > CREATE PDF > FROM SCANNER. It worked great. But some kind of software should really be supplied from Canon that can do that. Most people are not going to have Acrobat Professional and certainly won't buy a $450 program just to be able to use a $300 device. I know there is some scanning software that comes with the unit, but it's for Windows (and not sure what it can do.)
2) Auto document feeder also is giving me some trouble - it is scanning letter size pages as legal size. So there is all this white area at the bottom of my scans. Something I will have to talk to Canon about how to fix, if possible.
3) My home phone number doubles as my fax line so I run the telephone line from the wall into the unit -- and then then out to my phone. Whenever I use my phone to make a call - the MF4370DN turns on and starts to blink "Processing Data" and a green light on the side of the unit starts to blink as well. And it stays on for the whole call. Now when I talk on the phone I gotta see this light blinking in my periphery. Kind of annoying and a waste of energy if you ask me.
4)The instructions for using the scanner were not very clear. I installed what I thought was a scanning program on a CD that came with the device. After I installed it I thenspent ages looking for the scanning application which I just installed. Turns out there is no application, instead what you are really installing is the driver. You need to use your own scanning program - I use Photoshop.

5) Every time I want to scan something I need to push the Scan button twice on the device to put it into USB scan mode. It would be nice if it would automatically detect how it was going to transmit. Also you have 1.5 to 2 minutes from when you push SCAN twice to when the machine puts itself to sleep. So a few times now I have tried to scan and couldn't because the SCAN option timed out on the machine.
6) The manual is not Mac friendly. If it was it would have saved me a couple hours figuring out most of the above. I had to call Canon 3 times or so to get the kinks worked out.
But I must say that Canon technical support is bar none the best customer support I have ever experienced. A human will pick up the phone almost immediately and you are speaking to an educated, polite, sympathetic, and a very knowledgeable person who's first language is english and they live here in the good ol' USA. A+ on that Canon.
Despite the problems settings this up - I am happy with my purchase. As I am the first person to review this I am glad to pass on what I learned to help others make an informed choice and if you happen to buy it I hope that I helped save you some time setting it up.

(More customer reviews)August 28, 2004 - I just finished installing this machine for my parents, who are running OS X 10.3.4 (Panther) on an aging iMac G3/400 DV. The entire process was simple and uneventful. My surprise came afterwards when I started playing with the CX4600. It's a very solid little All-In-One (AIO)!
After reading reviews of older Epson, HP and Canon AIO's, I was worried about several things. So far, the print quality is very good, on par with my own C84. In fact, the CX4600 uses the same 4 separate CMYK ink cartridges as the C84, which means you won't have any trouble finding them at stores. The paper transport is a little loud, but not too bad. Printing is very quick once it gets going, with a quiet side to side undulation.
The scan quality is excellent for most uses and you can freely choose your resolution. Hint: the installer will put Epson Smart Panel on your desktop, but I prefer Epson Scan which is also installed in your Applications folder. This is the same control panel you might have seen before in the Epson Twain driver. You can choose Full Auto mode, where it will magically figure out what you are scanning and adjust settings to match (even finding and scanning multiple photos into individual files), or Professional mode, where you choose everything. To be honest, I use the middle "Home" setting on my own system, since it offers that very cool auto-magic assist with the ability to override when necessary.
Using the Copy function is.. fun. I can't explain why, but it's nice to *not* configure, adjust, crop, fit, or launch anything. Just hit the Color or B&W Copy button and it goes to work immediately. I must be easily entertained. Again, the quality is excellent. Professional designers will likely own a scanner and photo printer, but they (I) might consider owning one of these for convenience too.
Memory Card slots are the bonus which puts the CX4600 over the top. I think I spent the most time looking up info on these, to see if they could be used with iPhoto in OS X. The web site doesn't say. The owner's manual doesn't say. But the answer is YES! Along with everything else, the installer drops CardMonitor and PhotoStarter onto your drive. The latter can be set up to launch iPhoto when you plug your camera's card into the CX4600. The 12 test photos I took imported perfectly afterwards (set PhotoStarter so that it does not auto-download the photos; let iPhoto handle it). The manual does mention this functionality for Windows, so I'm sure it works just as well.
Minor annoyances: The CX4600 can only be connected via USB, so there is no longer any excuse to make customers "choose" their own cable. It should be in the box. And the installer warns that it will take a long time. They're not kidding. But it's only because it runs several individual installers, which all require your admin password and often spend a very long time searching your drive for some reason. It would be less painful if you could do this in one pass and walk away while it works. However, that's all history. Once set up, it is a thing of beauty.
Don't be turned off by the photos of the CX4600. In person, it actually looks very classy. The top portion is covered in a metallic paint, making it appear less like a recycling bin and more like a stylish computer peripheral. It's also smaller and heavier than it appears. The software is fairly seamless and lets you dig deep if you know where to look. That's about as good as it can get. If you've been looking for an All-In-One, this new Epson is a great choice.
UPDATE
It is now November 2005. About one month ago, it was time for the 3rd round of cartridges in the CX4600. Not bad for one year of light printing. My parents hadn't reported any major problems beyond one color clogging every so often. I was not pleased how much the ink level dropped when doing a single head cleaning, but I've used Epson printers for years and I wasn't surprised either.
However, all is not well. If I hadn't been there and seen it myself I wouldn't believe this. Yellow was running low first, so we replaced that cartridge. Levels check showed a fresh, full yellow tank. But when we printed a test page, there was no yellow at all. So we started a cleaning cycle. This emptied the magenta tank, so we replaced that one. The resulting test page now had no yellow or magenta. The same occurred with cyan and black, so I thought maybe we had received some bad (or old) Epson cartridges from Amazon. The little PC board connectors did look slightly different, but the product numbers were the same. I could hear ink sloshing inside and everything else checked out. In fact, after cleaning, Epson's own software showed ink levels dropping. So there was communication happening.
We went out the next day and bought more new ink, again only true Epson brand. Same result. One day, the CX4600 was printing fine. As each new color ink was installed, it simply stopped working. The scanner and card reader still work. Epson's advice? 'Clean the print heads.'
We ended up getting a good deal on a replacement CX4600, since we had all this ink, the original was out of warranty, and it would likely cost more just to ship it somewhere to be 'looked at.' The new one works perfectly with the very same ink cartridges. I believe Epson changed the electronics in these ink cartridges at some point, which broke compatibility with first generation CX4600 units. I don't know if this was intentional or accidental, but I know this one was registered with Epson and we were not notified.
The CX4600 was a nice little AIO when it worked. It's too bad Epson has fallen so far into the disposable product model, that they feel no responsibility towards their customers.

Pros: The scanner is very good, with an auto feeder, and scan quality is good for both documents and photos. The print speed and quality is good. Having 2 paper sources (bottom plain paper cassette, rear feeder) is a time saver. The auto-duplex printing is very handy. Fax quality is good. Auto feeding for faxes is nice, but not something I will use that much. Builtin networking, so I don't need to have a PC continuously powered up when the family laptops want to print. Photo prints have good detail and shading. Printing directly from various memory cards and cameras is easy.
Cons: Photo prints colors need some tweaking. It's all a bit bright with a tendency toward a very slight pink cast. Admittedly, I have not done that many color photos as yet. Tones and shades are not as accurate as a printer with more colors. This one has 6 ink tanks, but 2 of them are shades of black, so printing must be done with 4 colors. This printer is adequate for amateur snaps, but won't replace a dedicated photo printer. No scanning of film or negatives. Printer is large but that's a given with this many functions.

In addition to the PgR ink system, the printer has a print head capable of producing two-picoliter ink droplets for exacting detail. (More customer reviews)For eighty bucks, this little 1410 is a deal. Print speed and quality are both good very for the price, and the scanner is surprisingly good. The unit is compact enough to fit on a shelf beside my desk, and it operates quietly, too.
Some here have complained about the 1410's ink cartridges being small and short-lived. To that I say anyone who prints in volume will find an inkjet printer isn't going to be the most economical choice. In my experience, I've found the 1410's ink to last a reasonable time, and the cartridges are less expensive than those required by two other printers I have.
Yes, the software does take forever to install, but it's very easy to do, and here's a tip. On the HP support website, a "basic" version of the software is available (drivers and controls, without the image editing and other fluff). It still isn't speedy to install, but is faster than the disk that comes with the printer. The downside of any multifunction machine from any manufacturer is that the software that comes with it tends to be quite bloated.
Pay more money, and you'll get more speed, better print quality, and lower printing cost-per-page maybe, but the 1410 has been just about perfect for my purposes, and didn't cost me much in the process. It has been reliable so far, I get good print and scan results with it, and I recommend it highly.

(More customer reviews)Several years ago while my wife was in college and suffering through painfully long print times when printing PDFs, I looked around and found the printer with the fastest PDF print speed: a mid range Cannon inkjet. I reluctantly jumped to Canon after owning HPs for years and I've never looked back. I've switched my family over to Canons and everyone agrees: these are just easier printers to use. Except for the high-end professional photo printers, Canons are known for "average" photo quality. Good, but not the best (HP generally wins there). If you are looking for the best picture quality at this price, you probably want to look at an HP. If you are looking for good picture quality but mostly want a reliable, easy to use printer that never jams, read on.
The Canon PIXMA MX350 currently (as of 10/14/2010) sits at the top of the 300 series of printers Canon multi-function printers. The 350 shares the same print engine at the 340 but includes a better scanner and faster fax. The 320 has an older and slower version of the print engine found in the 350 and 340. The 320 lacks wireless lan connectivity found in the 350 and 340 (note none of these have Ethernet). The best overall value is the 340, but for the $30 extra dollars the faster fax and better scanner are worth it to me. All of these printers use the Cl-211 black and multi-color cartridges (unlike many Canons these models do not use individual color cartridges).
I personally find the print quality for text, graphics, and photos to be very good, but not "the best". The print speed is above average for text and photos.
Here are some independently measured print times (Canon's advertised print times are close to this)
Text 7.7 pages per minute
Cost = 6.5 cents
4x6 photo 1.8 minute
Cost = $0.55
8x10 3.2 minutes
Cost = $1.80
The print cost is low, but not the lowest (if you care, Lexmark tends to have the lowest text print cost and Kodak tends to win on color).
As mentioned before, the entire MX300 series use two ink cartridges: one black and one combined color. The cartridges are designed so you can't put them in the wrong slot. The black is a very good water resistant, pigment-based ink. The color inks are less expensive dye-based inks.
The button lay out is good and it's easy to get started using all the features. The wireless lan setup was pretty easy and the range is very good (better than my laptop). The 350 has the best LCD (backlit) of the 300 series. It also has flash card slots and a 30 sheet document feeder. I've printed hundreds of documents on mine and have never managed to jam it or end up with a double paper feed. This is an easy to use home-office workhorse that I think would satisfy most users. I also happen to have a higher-end MP970 Canon all-in-one and I've done quite a few comparisons. Aside from better photo quality (and inks) and a little more speed I can't find much difference between them. If I was just going to buy one I'd probably go for the MX350 and save some money but if photo quality is very important to you I'd look at a higher end Canon MP series or HP Photosmart. Both rate excellent for photo quality and the higher end models use better inks.

I haven't had any problems with it - software or performance. But it's just adequate. After making 10 copies the ink indicator was at 2/3. It really only scans marginally well. If you want it for color scans or pictures take time to research better printers.
HP makes good moderate-use printers and this is one.

(More customer reviews)I bought my PIXMA on more or less no research, other than having really liked Canon's printers in the past. My several year old Canon S600 stopped working suddenly, and my kids needed to print homework ASAP. So I ran to a nearby big box store, and picked one up. The price was reasonable, and I thought the scanner / copier functions would come in handy (although I already had a flatbed scanner...but it was so old-school it still only ran on a parallel cable...remember those kids!?!).
Anyway, it set up in no time and worked perfectly right off the bat. It makes good quality prints, and the photos look fine too me...not heavey on the red. It's also nice to put a memory card right in the printer and print photos without needing to even have the computer on. The copier function, although only used twice in two months, works good. The printer came with lots of bundled hardware. Usually, I have no use for the bundled stuff, it's always the LE edition or very limited in someway. But the Canon Easy Photo print makes it a snap for me or my technophobe wife to print photos in whatever size and on whatever paper without any big headaches. The OCR software is very good. My three year old OmniPro, which I paid a fair amount for, doesn't work as good.
I can't say yet how efficient its toner use is...haven't had it long enough to judge.
There are a couple of downsides. It is SLOW to start. First copies sometimes take long enough to kick in that you wonder if something is wrong. But when it starts, it is quite fast. For plain paper printing with some photos and graphics...the graphics barely slow it down. Full color, high quality photos take a little longer, but are still fast. You just have to be patient for that one page to start. Scanning is the same way...the scanner has to "think" for a bit before it starts, but then it's fast. It is a little bit noisy...nothing to send the neighbors calling the cops or anything...but it's the noisiest ink jet I've owned. The scanning is a little noisy too.
But overall, I'm thrilled to have gotten a good quality item and at a really great price too. I'm very happy with it!! I think most routine users would be too.

(More customer reviews)This the third Brother laser printer I've purchased in the past seven years. This machine was a logical first choice based on my good experience with this brand. I've had this one for about four months and have put it to heavy use. Simply put, this machine does exactly what it promises and without any glitch. I used it with both my Mac and Windows XP PC at home; the software integrates well. Four other positives are worth mentioning: (1) the toner refills are inexpensive ($60 for the 7,000 page version), (2) they can be reliably refilled once each with the toner refill kits off of ebay ($12-16 each; not a messy process), (3) mine's not as loud as another reviewer's unit seemed to be (or maybe I'm used to the level of noise from Brother printers;), (4) The duplexing works very reliably (not a single jam since I bought this unit). Highly recommended.

Canon PIXMA MP800 All In One Photo Printer Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased the mp800 to replace my Lexmark X-85 "INK GOBBLER" because I got tired of not being able to refill the ink successfully and paying through the nose for replacement ink cartridges. The Lex X-85 was over three years old and I was ready for a better printer that new technology had to offer.
I am very pleased with the MP800. It's printing quality and speed is excellent for this caliber of printer. Most of the photos I have printed are on "Jet Print" professional photo paper which has worked well. I have yet to purchase some Canon Photo Paper Pro and try it. I did however print one 4x6 photo from the included pack of Canon Photo Paper Pro that came with the printer. The photo quality was amazing!
Regarding the refilling of the ink cartridges: I purchased the 5 ink refill kit from re-inks.com for $60.00. the kit has enough ink for about 12 refills of per cartridge.
The printer is smart enough to know that you are using refilled ink cartridges but it allows you to continue with a warning that Canon may not be responsible for damage.
once you get past the warning the printer asks you to press the stop/reset button for 5 seconds and the printer will continue to print using the refilled cartridge but when you view the Ink Status Monitor it shows the ink tank level as empty.
So in the future you will have to manually remove the cartridge to view it's ink quality. This is easy to do because Canon's ink tanks are Clear Plastic!
This simple reset procedure is required each time the printer detects a refilled cartridge. I suspect that once all 5 cartridges have been "released" from ink detection, it might not ask you again to go through the reset process again. I haven't got there yet. Thanks canon for leaving the Ink Refill Door Open! Hope this info helps. Scott

(More customer reviews)The printer is a gem. Slow in relation to the old workhorse (which I hated to retire) the HP III, but on-the-whole, no slower than most other color printers.
The only real problem I have had is that there was no User's Guide with the machine. Finding one has proven difficult. It is not on the install CD, and I am waiting for an answer to an e-mail note to the vendor.
One document included in those that arrived with the printer speaks of an HP Photo Cartridge and Print Cartridge Storage container, but even the HP website does not recognize the part number.
Aside from what I believe is inadequate documentation, if you are trying to get rid of all those clunky, large, old, single function machines, this is clearly the way to go. Less space and greater functionality are implied in the description. This is a multi-function device that works.

(More customer reviews)I have had a 968 wireless and a plain 968. They are fair machines as stand-alone multi-function units except they are noisy.
The set-up and compatability with MS Windows Vista is a nightmare. Just type "Vista and Dell 968" into Google and see for yourself how problematic they are together. It might be the Dell drivers, software, or the bugs in Vista. It doesn't matter except they don't work together. I have lost countless hours as a result over a period of two years.
I have a Dell replacement warranty for three years on my newest 968 which is also useless as the techs cannot fix the problems and always end up telling me to reload Vista which does not fix the many outstanding compatability/connectivity issues.
It does work flawlessly with XP in my experience on two other computers.

The ink lasted as long as any other inkjet I've had and longer than most. This is a basic unit which does what intended for an economical price. It is not designed for high volumne use, for that you need laser.

So little noise, and so lightweight. Love the scanner and copier features. Software installed fine on my Windows Vista-run computer. It does not seem to use a whole lot of ink, so that will cut down on the cost. In closing, all I can say is: what are all of you complaining about?

(More customer reviews)I bought this printer in Jan. 2011 and it was broken 3 months later. It got a paper jam one day and never fed paper into the printer properly after that. It pulls to one side each time you try to print and then jams. It felt very flimsy from the first day I got it, so I guess I didn't expect it to last for years...thought it would last longer than 3 months though. Ink cartridges run dry very fast too. They are very small and feel light compared with my last HP printer's cartridges (which I've had for over 8 years by the way, and the printer still works). I have to say the scanner worked well for me and made great copies while it lasted. I wouldn't buy this printer again.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this printer a few months ago not because my previous printer had failed but because I simply couldn't use my scanner and printer at the same time. This printer had just been released and there was little information but I took a chance and have been incredibly happy with it since.
Most of the complaints I see here seem to be a problem of unrealistic expectations. This unit is NOT a fax machine. You can scan something into your computer and fax it using a modem but that's another story. This unit is NOT a laser printer nor is it a high end photo printer. It is also NOT a stand alone copying machine. It is printer that scans and copies.
I found the installation to be simple - follow the instructions that come with it and you'll be fine - be careful aligning the print cartridges (its easy but just don't blow it off) and the print quality will be significantly better. I installed the software and was a little worried when I went to print the first time and the familiar print setup page was replaced with a huge assortment of options. My worry was quickly replaced with excitement - you can store your printing preferences! If you are like me you don't need to print every webpage in beautiful color, its a waste of time and ink, so I have a setting for Black & White Draft, works like a charm.
Now I must admit that the black and white printing is not any better than my old Lexmark - inkjets are inkjets. The color and picture quality though is significantly better. Using the best printing option on photo paper it was hard to tell it came from an inkjet. I have found the photocopying and scanning to be nice and clear as well.
Overall I'm very pleased with this space saving printer.

(More customer reviews)We have had this all-in-one for about a month now. It is great! It makes great photocopies, scanned images and prints from our computer with ease. The one thing that I like the most, however, is that the inks are in separate and inexpensive tanks. When the yellow runs out, you just replace the yellow . . . imagine that! Also, the ink tanks are super inexpensive when I find them here on Amazon or on Ebay. Shop around a bit and you will see what I mean.
I would definitely purchase this unit again.

I am overjoyed with the Lexmark X6170 it does everything and more quality & speed are great and setup was so easy it was the icing on the cake. It has stand alone faxing & pc based faxing which was real important for me. This was worth every cent and at $200.00 after rebate it's a steal. Go get it you will not be sorry.

The X6170 from Lexmark is an all-in-one scanner, copier, and fax machine that delivers both the quality and features that today's users demand. Utilizing a thermal inkjet print method, the X6170 provides full color print resolutions up to 4,800 x 1,200 dpi as well as print speeds as fast as 19 pages per minute (black, lower-resolution mode). (More customer reviews)Approximately one month ago, I purchased the 6500A plus. Installation was straightforward, and it appeared to operate well. One flaw quickly became apparent, however: whenever the printer sat idle for more a few minutes, it would subsequently not print. Scouring the available troubleshooting guides in its software, I came across a piece of advice that suggested I turn the printer off, then on again. That worked, except printing documents now required 1) pressing the power button to deactivate sleep mode 2) pressing it once more to turn it off 3) pressing it again to turn the printer on. Quickly, this process became annoying and I looked up HP's customer service # online. Thus began a two hour conversation with one of their technical support reps.
The customer service employee I spoke to sounded foreign (later found out he was in the Phillippines) but had a fairly good command of English. However, he misstated a couple of things, and only as I was about to hang up and decided to summarize his earlier statements, did I learn what really was going on. My printer has a known bug, that affects apparently a minority of all of these models; namely, after being turned on for about 5 minutes, the printer quickly enters sleep mode and does not come out of it when you go to print. The representative looked for a work around in the, and I'm not making this up, "underwear" settings, and began to see how to fix "energy saving mode" (what he called it instead of "sleep mode"). He sounded like he was clueless. Then we went through several trials where he asked me to press button after button on the keypad, which lasted about 15 minutes. In between instructions, he put me on hold to confer with colleagues and search online forums. The keypad buttons he told me to press did absolutely nothing....the printer did not respond whatsoever. I might have well as been tapping on the desk.
I asked if I could receive a replacement, to which he replied no, as this defect did not warrant one. However he said he could help me get an upgrade, but would not elaborate. I then asked to speak to a supervisor. A period of a few minutes of silence ensued where he did not respond, and I thought he may have disconnected. Suddenly, he came on the line and suggest he could offer me a replacement, but not an upgrade. One hour later, after being given incorrect service tag #'s, and more frustration, I finished the conversation and am expecting a replacement in about a week.
Oh, and before hanging up he told me his name was Peggy. If only.
12/23/10 Update: I received the new printer today, installed it, and it appears to work properly. Once left idle for several minutes, the printer enters sleep mode, and subsequently jumps to life when I go to print (as it should). At this point I'd like to make a couple more observations: The printer does not come with a paper copy of a user guide. The user guide is a software version, and the search option is inferior. By comparison to Google, it looks like it was designed by 3rd graders. After some effort, though, I discovered that energy saving mode totally different from sleep mode. The entire goal of "Peggy's" help was to deactivate or delay energy saving mode. That would not have affected sleep mode (nor my printers' problems) in the slightest! HP has some serious customer service issues if their employees are so ill-informed they don't understand the basic features of their own printers.
FYI: Energy saving mode will turn off the processor and firmware when the printer is turned off, in order to cut down on electricity usage. Sleep mode, on the other hand, deactivates the lcd and enables the printer to use less electricity while still on. Energy saving mode can be turned off through one of the lcd sub-menus, while sleep mode cannot be.

(More customer reviews)I have primarily owned HP printers for the last 15 years, but was having sporadic problems with my main printer, an HP D360 photo printer. I was tired of troubleshooting with HP, so I decided to give in and go with the Lexmark Prevail Pro705. I shopped around and didn't really do much research prior to buying. I knew I wanted to try a new manufacturer and was hoping to get a multi-function unit. I was in an office supply store and asked if Lexmark was comparable to HP quality, and saw for myself that there wasn't a lot of difference in quality.
The Prevail Pro705 was the new model at the time of purchase (Oct 14th, 2009). This is my first purchase from Lexmark and I am very pleased. The most appealing things to me about this particular model were the number of features (Fax, Scanner, Copier, Printer), the 5 year warranty, and the slightly lower costs per print than the HP model. The color cartridge claims to get about 200 prints more than the HP 02 color cartridges, so that (ideally) means more prints for less.
After unboxing the printer, I first tried to set it up on Windows Vista Ultimate PC, connecting via USB cable (included). I was able to print a test page, but had difficulty printing pictures- the progress bar would only go to about 30% or so. I contacted tech support help troubleshoot my issue. They spent 4 hours trying to tweak things while remotely connected to my computer, with no luck. At the end of the first support session I was worse off- the printer was struggling to print a complete test page. Fortunately, my issue was escalated to second level support whom I was able to get in touch with the next day. After another two hours of trouble shooting, I was told this was an issue that may need to be submitted to the software engineering team. I was getting ready to pack up the printer to return it, but I decided to mention to the technician that I had another computer (a netbook) that had Windows XP on it and if that would make any difference. The tech recommended that I try to install the printer on that using the USB cable. I followed his instructions later that night and was able to get the printer installed and it printed everything, including pictures, perfectly. After that, I thought I'd try printing using wireless (instead of the USB) from my Vista computer and everything worked perfectly. Apparently, there are still some bugs that need to be worked out for Vista, or it is possible that my Vista computer has other issues that prevent the printer from functioning properly over USB. Since I also had issues with HP printer, I think it is possible that my computer settings are the culprit. The Lexmark support technician said the issues seemed to be related to a firewall on my computer, though we disabled that and still had the problem. The tech support people were very helpful and spoke good English, despite being in another country.
Had it not been for the trouble that I ran into while installing the printer on Vista and the lengthy tech support calls, I would have given a 5 star review. There are many pro's: the photo prints are very comparable in quality to my HP D360. The printer makes some noise when printing, but a lot less than my old printer. The wireless capability of this printer was a life saver and it was very easy to get set up with the software included (I am using a dlink wireless N router, with WPA security). It seems that it is also possible to set up the wireless capability from the printer, but I didn't try that.
The copy functionality of the printer works well. It took less than 30 seconds to make a copy and it looks very clean, though some colors (like light grays) seemed to be a little darker on the copy. There is also an "eco" setting that will automatically make copies on two sides of the page. This is a nice feature and saves paper, which I like. The eco mode also puts the printer into sleep mode after a certain amount of time.
I would recommend this to anyone looking for a solid multi-function printer. It seems to have similar quality and capability to the more expensive HP printers.

(More customer reviews)When I saw the opportunity to review this Epson 810 All-in-One through the Amazon Vine program, I jumped at it. I've used All-in-ones for almost ten years, sampling a variety of printers from HP, Canon, Brother, etc. I find this printer excels in a number of areas and fails in only one.
Here's my take on it:
PROS:
1. Print quality is as good as Epson claims. Whether these prints will actually last four times longer than drugstore prints is still up for grabs -- who has years to check out this claim? Nevertheless, the text and photos are very nice indeed.
2. Although I may never use it again, the coloring book feature is fun. For families with small children, I'm sure this feature will be appreciated.
3. Being able to charge up my mp3 player from the port on the front of the printer is a nice little extra. Anytime I can avoid powering up the computer for such a small task, I'm happy. And now I have a quick way to do that.
4. I love the bright, easy to read control panel. The menu will easily take you where you need to go, such as a quick check of ink levels (again, without powering up the computer).
5. Ink usage appears to be very conservative. I've gone through a ream of paper without exhausting the standard (not high capacity) black cartridge.
6. This printer actually can use recycled paper. Over the years, I've been limited in my paper to 24 lb paper as 20 recycled paper caused repeated jams with my other printers. This feature alone will mean a reduction in my paper bills.
7. The printer includes an automatic duplexer. You do have to setup this function on printer preferences, but I enjoy using fewer sheets.
8. Included in the box was a single printable dvd. I tried making a color label, and it looks great. I'll be buying printable CDs and DVDs just for the pleasure of having nice looking disks.
9. The printer itself is good-looking and fits in well with the other equipment on my desk. No reason a printer should be ugly, is there?
CONS:
The scanner works only through a USB connection to my computer, although you can save a scan to a memory card. Why is that? Is there something special about wireless that prevents sending a scan to a computer?
UNKNOWN:
I have not used the fax because my VOIP phone service does not currently support faxing.
Overall, I'm a delighted user. This is a good printer for a family network.
Four stars!
UPDATE: November 25, 2009
I reinstalled the software, using the software downloaded from Epson. Voila! Epson Scan now appears on my desktop, and my problem is solved. If it were possible to change the number of stars, I would now award this printer five stars!
UPDATE: December 1, 2009
Here's the trick. You must start the Epson Scan from your computer, rather than from the printer (where you'll be standing when you put the photo on the scanner). Then you'll be able to receive the scan on your computer and without hitching it up to the printer directly.

Almost a year has passed since I began using this printer. I am pleased to report that it is working just as well now as the first week I got it. In addition, I want to point out that. in those 11 months, I have experienced only one paper jam. I do use 24 lb rather than 20 lb paper, and I believe this helps avoid jams. However, this is the fourth duplex printer I've owned, and it is by far the best.

Right out of the box, there are a few nice features to this printer - as well as a couple of not so nice ones. First, the document feeder on top cleverly disappears when you flip it closed to make a continuous and easily dusted surface, plus it looks sleek. Second, the angle of the control panel is easily adjustable with a quick pull of the concealed release handle. Third, there are convenient indentations on the bottom sides of the printer for picking it up and carrying it (a small but thoughtful finger saving feature). Finally, it ships with 4 full ink cartridges. I've purchased printers in the past that provided enough ink to test the printer, but that was about it. Having to shelling out another fifty bucks or more for ink when you first buy a printer is a bit unsavory to me. The lack of a door/cover for the memory card bay and the fact that paper tray has a dust collecting cutout in front are the only two areas lacking in the physical design of this printer.
Setup
From unpacking to printing a test page over my wireless network took about 40 minutes. The process included installing and priming the ink (which takes a few minutes), installing the drivers, connecting via USB (to make setting up the wireless connection faster - but you can use the printer keyboard if you have prefer), and then connecting wirelessly. Connecting wirelessly was so easy, at first I worried how secure my network was. All I needed to do was confirm my SSID. Since I was installing from a laptop using the same network, the software took care of getting all the needed information from the PC. I didn't even have to enter a WEP key.
Bonus Software
Installing the bonus software for photo editing and scanning, as well as updating the drivers, took about another 30 minutes. Registration was quick because the software filled in many of the blanks like name, email, state, zip, and serial number of the printer (not sure how I feel about where/how it got my personal information since I have no other Epson products).
Of note, the first attempt at the driver updates via the wireless connection failed. I had to plug in the USB cable again and then update. Then, when I got up the next morning, the scanner was not found by the computer so I used the driver update utility again and, for the second time, it found updated drivers for the printer and the scanner. It also popped up a window this time warning to install the printer driver first. After installing the printer driver, rebooting, and then installing the scanner driver, all was well. Of note, the second driver installation went well over the wireless connection. My guess is that the failed first attempt caused the scanner driver to be installed first.
Overall
This is a fast printer and scanner. The scanner warm up is very brief. This brief warm up allows the printer to turn off the bulb soon after the scan competes, thus saving power. Scanning documents using the ADF worked flawlessly. Scanning into color PDF files took a couple of minutes per page, including the file conversion. Printing pages of Word documents was lightening fast in both color and black and white. Making a color copy on the standard quality setting using the ADF took about 26 seconds including the scanner warm up. Photo printing speed was good and the quality, for a multifunction unit, was good as well.
The scanner software is basic and lacks some of the features of my Canon MP830 such as the ability to scan several pictures at a time into multiple .jpg files (in essence one pass of the scanner creates several pictures). The picture printing software is very easy to use and also very basic. There is not much editing capability besides positioning, color correction and adding a frame.
The price of the ink seems a bit high for the black, nearly twice the price of my Canon MP830. Epson's claim is that it lasts up to twice as long, so time will tell if it is worth the price. The CMY color pack is about the same price.
There is one issue that is almost worthy of losing a star. Twice, when I launched the "Epson Scan Settings" program it was unable to communicate with the scanner. I had to hit the refresh button to get it to appear. Also, when I tried to launch "Epson Scan" it would not launch until I hit refresh in the "Epson Scan Settings" program (they are two separate programs). That is too quirky for my tastes and now I am faced with wasting time searching for solutions - or putting up with it until a future update fixes it.
The price of this Epson is less than half of what I paid for my Canon, but it lacks duplex printing with the automatic document feeder. In exchange you get really fast printing wirelessly. Overall, this is a quality printer at a really reasonable price.

(More customer reviews)This printer will tell you when you are out of toners and need new ones. And when you are out with just one of the color toner, this printer will not allow you to print anything until you replace it with the new toner.
So here is how to override these problem, and you decide when the toner needs to be changed... and not the printer.
1. Slide out the toner trays and put a piece of black electrical tape over the sensors on each color toner. This will make the print think that it has full toner.
2. If you already see "Replace Toner" messages, just RESET it by opening the front COVER and pressing CLEAR and REPRINT together. Scroll up and down to reset desired toner.
3. If you think you have more life and juice left on its drum and laser parts, just reset it and forget it! Open the COVER, and hold down GO and hit UP (+) button. Scroll through the menu to select and reset!!!!
After the "replace toner" message, I reset the counter, and I have printed over 2000 more pages on a same cartridge. But be aware! You will start to see some "sprinkles of toners" on your pages as they are way over used.

(More customer reviews)I've been waiting for this printer to come out for quite some time. I previously used Canon's MP730 and completely loved it. This new version adds several great features, and after a few days of playing around with it, it has lived up to my high expectations.
The MP830 is a bit shorter and wider than Canon's previous all-in-ones, and it looks a bit more "classy" with a black-on-black keypad and a color LCD screen. There are two paper trays: the main tray is an upright tray in the rear, and a pull-out tray is located on the bottom of the machine. My old 730 had a plastic cover that protected the paper in the vertical tray from dust, and that cover is no longer included. I live is a dusty area, and if the paper gets a layer of dust on it, that dust can collect on and clog the print head. To remedy this, I've decided to use the smaller pull out tray as my primary paper tray (you can select the primary paper tray with a button on the keypad).
This printer uses Canon's new "8" series inks. While these are top-of-the-line inks (UV resistant, pigment/dye system), they are considerably more expensive than the 3 or 6 series inks used my many of Canons previous printers. Also, each ink cartridge has a small computer chip attached to it which makes obtaining remanufactured or generic cartridges difficult. At the moment you cannot find generic ink for this printer, and various websites advise against refilling these cartridges as they ink density is different from the previous inks, and doing so might wreck your printhead. So if you were used to paying $3/cartridge for generic canon cartridges, you might have to raise your ink budget for a while (currently, cartridges are about $14 each, and there are five of them in this printer).
This printer has duplex printing and scanning, meaning that it can scan/print both sides of a sheet. At some point, I was led to believe that the scanner was able to scan both sides *at the same time*, but that is actually not the case. After a piece of paper is scanned through the auto document feeder, it is sucked back in, flipped around and re-scanned. This adds considerable time to your scanning tasks. If you are pressed for time, it is actually faster to scan in "manual duplex" where you scan the front sides of pages, then manually the pages over and re-scan the back sides. However, if you want to hit the scan button and walk away, the auto-duplex does its job well. The same issue exists for duplex printing--it works, but it takes more time than if you had manually duplexed the pages.
The fax is a fax. It works fine, and some test color-faxes I sent came out well.
The copier also works well, and the duplexers allow you to make two-sided to two-sided copies, but as I said before, this takes some time.
The scanner does a great job with photos and documents. It is considerably faster than earlier models, thanks in part to the USB 2.0 interface and new scan sensor. Also, the updated scanning software is a significant improvment over previous versions.
I've printed out some photos and they are of amazing quality, which is what I expect from Canon printers. However, because of the cost of the inks, I will not be printing photos very often. The text is a bit light for my taste (the black is more like a very dark grey).
All in all, this is a great printer/scanner/fax/copier and I am very happy with it.

Note: Unfortunately, the memory card slots on the printer do not allow for USB2.0 transfer to the comptuer. If you need to move lots of data from a memory card to your desktop, use a dedicated card-reader; using the slots on this printer takes way too long.

ADDED 5/9/06: After having this machine for just over a month, I have to say it runs through ink way too fast. My ink status lists several cartridges as only 25% full, and is warning me that two of my colors are "almost empty." I print 90% black text, 9% color documents (web pages, rebate forms, etc), and only about 1% photos (I have only printed 2 4x6 photos since I purchased the printer). My previous Canon printers sipped ink, this machine chugs it, and at $14/cartridge, that is unacceptable. (Especially becuase the print quality isn't much better than previous printers.)

However, I did have significant difficulty loading paper for the first time. The guides on the back are very tight and at first would not allow letter size paper to fit. It took about 10 minutes to figure out how to load paper by squeezing the guides to open them up which surprised me a little. The unit works great now though--I have printed checks from Quicken and other routine stuff without a hitch. One key thing: once you have it set up be sure to call the HP 800 number and they will send you a test fax right away--a great feature. All in all--looks like it will be a terrific machine for the price.

(More customer reviews)While advertised as being compatible with the Macintosh operating system, the installation manual's instructions for getting the wireless system working do not work. I needed to use Lexmark's live chat (and allow them to wire in to my computer) to get it working using a completely different installation procedure. Then within a few weeks, the wireless network card began having problems and I needed to resort to live chat again. The technician told me there was NO way to install the printer on a Mac, even though I'd already done it. Almost three hours later, while trying to access a menu on the printer that apparently does not actually exist, the printer started printing from the queue on its own. The technician declared the printer fixed. Within an hour, it stopped working again. The error code clearly says the network card has an unrecoverable error and needs to be replaced, but Lexmark keeps sending me new things to try to get it working. So now I can only use my wireless printer when it is connected by USB cable.
On the positive side, print quality is excellent. Speed is good unless there are graphics, in which case it is very slow.
If the wireless card wasn't broken and/or if the technical support people could actually fix the problem, I'd probably rate the printer four stars.

Canon Selphy CP740 Compact Photo Printer (2094B001) Review

(More customer reviews)I have been VERY pleasantly surprised at the quality of the prints generated by the Selphy 740. I have another printer I use for larger (8x10) printing & photo's but I wanted something that turned out native 4x6" prints for easy photo-albuming and spontaneous, on-the-spot giving to friends & family. (The lack of such traditional prints in this traditional form-factor is the great bane of digital photography, IMHO!)
The BEST thing about this printer is the "layered film" technology used to actually print the images. I was a bit worried when I received the printer and discovered that, rather than using ink cartridges, a spooled cassette of CMY-sequenced films are used. This mechanism always struck me as a bit wasteful but I honestly believe it DOES produce the best images, with virtually no pixelization visible in the print. There is also a FOURTH layer, which is clear, that is overlaid atop the 3 separately applied CMY layers. This clear layer gives a WONDERFUL "photographic print" feeling to the final product -- I've always disliked how inkjet printers produce prints in which it is obvious (visually & tactilely) that the ink is simply sitting on top of the paper. The uppermost "clear layer" applied by the Selphy system results in a print that is virtually indistinguishable from one printed by a photo lab.
I'm not sure what to think about other reviewers criticism that the prints come out dark -- I believe this is more a comment on the camera and/or monitor on which the images are created & viewed. I generally bump up the saturation and brightness "one click" in the printer's properties dialog before I print a photo, but I do this same thing on all printers.
I concede that $0.26 per print is SLIGHTLY on the pricey side and that you can get less expensive prints at CostCo that (might?) look a BIT better, but I for one know that I am more than likely to never actually get such photo's printed. Having this Selphy 740 printer at home, where it is easily & spontaneously available, and generating very good prints is a VERY worthwhile value to me.

***UPDATE*** It's 3 years later and I still use this printer and am still loving the results. Yeah, it prints dark but I just make it a standard practice to use the "printer properties" to bump up the brightness by 2 notches and bump up the contrast by 1 notch. I have become the local photomart for several of my friends & family. My thumb is still up!!

(More customer reviews)After unpacking the print server I was up and printing within 15 minutes on both printers from both computers in my network. It took me a couple of minutes to get the utility "PS-Utility" to see the print server by disabling the Windows firewall and then discovering that I could add the utility to the exceptions list in order to enable to firewall again. I am able to access all printer specific functions through the drivers as if the printers were connected directly to the computer.
It has been a couple of days and I have had no problems.
Configuration:
-Operating System: Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home.
-Router: Linksys WRT55AG
-Print server: TRENDnet TE100-P21
-Dell XPS Gen 3 Desktop connected to router via enet cable.

(More customer reviews)I bought this all-in-one because my other printer is not a copy-capable printer and we need that capability. I did some research and finally decided on the Epson NX515 after reading several reviews. So far I have been very pleased with it. I have a couple of small gripes but nothing that cannot be overlooked.
The NX515 is actually a relatively small printer, taking up a little less space than any of my previous printers. It is also lightweight and easy to move should there be a need.
Setting up the NX515 is simple. There is a quick-start guide that explains the process of configuration and it makes the set-up almost foolproof. From the time I opened the box to the time I had a working printer that was producing output was less than 15 minutes, and there were no confusing or difficult steps in the process.
The only negative about the setup is that Epson, like almost every other printer vendor, does NOT include a USB cable in the box. The cost of a USB cable is actually only a couple of dollars (they're a high-profit item) so including one would not break the bank. If you do no have a spare USB cable available and you wish to direct-connect this printer, be sure to pick one up before trying to set up.
Once configured, the NX515 is a very capable printer. It has the fastest print speeds I have ever seen in an inkjet, printing faster in standard mode than I have seen most printers print in draft mode (for standard text - does not apply to photo printing). The quality does not suffer either and is excellent. I was pleased to see than this printer does not produce the banding I have seen in Epson printers' output in the past.
The control panel for setting up copying is very easy to read and very easy to navigate. It is very simple to change copy parameters and the instructions in the panel are straightforward.
I have not used the scanning capabilities of the NX515.
One feature I wish was available, even if it required buying an attachment, is automatic duplex printing. My other printer handles duplex printing with ease and requires no intervention at all. The NX515 does duplex printing but it requires manual intervention. This is a minor inconvenience, not a deal-breaker.
Epson has produced a very nice all-in-one in the NX515. The setup is simple and the print speeds are absolutely stunning. It is by no means a perfect device but it is an excellent product at an excellent price (approximately $110 at the moment). If you need a printer that can handle scanning and copying while producing beautiful prints, give this printer a close look.

Canon PIXMA MX330 Inkjet All-In-One Printer Review

(More customer reviews)This review is actually on the Canon MX320. It is the MX330's little brother. Both printers are identical except the MX320 does not have the color lcd screen, it has a 2-line dot matrix screen. Since I do all of my editing on my computer, and can't see much on the little screen anyway, I chose to save about $40. Either printer offers great value in my humble opinion.
PROS:
1. Photo quality equal to my Canon MX830. I don't know why or how but the prints look the same. Even better if you use Canon's "VIVID" setting in the Easy Photo Print software under paper selector.
2. The scanner reproduces colors and details that are very close to original and you have the option to touch up photos after scanning. Using the ADF you can copy legal size papers.
3. The fax options are not perfect but they work. This is the first all-in-one that I've owned that I can actually leave the fax running in the back round without it interfering with phone calls on the same line. Using the TEL Preferred setting the fax will start automatically if you answer the phone and it is a fax. This even works from a remote phone by dialing 25 if you hear the fax noise when you answer. Up to 50 (20 pages of documents) faxes will be stored in memory if you run out of paper or ink.
4. My favorite option on this printer is the fact that you can choose which cartridge to print from. This will save a lot of the more expensive color ink, especially from advertisements faxed to you. Simply follow these steps to print from black only:
a. Click on the MY PRINTER icon the software installed on your desktop
b. Click on the PRINTER SETTINGS tab
c. Click on the MAINTENANCE tab
d. Click on the INK CARTRIDGE SETTINGS tab
e. Choose from using BLACK ONLY cartridge, COLOR ONLY cartridge, or BOTH cartridges
The black only setting only works with plain paper and envelopes so photos will still print in color. Plus it takes only seconds to change settings if you need color in your text documents. This setting works great if you have teenagers that print everything they see.
5. You can fax straight from your computer without first printing the fax. Just click on PRINT and choose Canon MX330 Fax as your printer. The fax works just like you ran it through the printer, including printing a receipt if you have set this up on the printer.
6. At about $.05 per black and white page printed, using the XL ink cartridges, and the ability to print photos that will last up to 300 years I feel the print costs are reasonable.
7. I bought the MX320 after trying the Epson NX300. There is no comparison between the 2 printers. The Canon exceeded my expectations in every category. At $69 the MX320 (MX330) is an all-in-one printer that works perfectly for a small home business on a tight budget.
CONS:
1. The lcd screen on the MX320 is hard to read sometimes because there is no backlight. Luckily you only have to use it to set up the printer and fax one time.
2. There is only 1 paper tray.
CONCLUSION:
Every printer requires a compromise in some area. Users of the HP printers I was interested in are reporting problems with Windows Vista, which I confirmed on HP's own site. The Epson model I tried was noisy, slow, and draft text was barely readable. Not to mention I went through 2 Epson's because of print head clogging problems. Brother and Kodak printers are unknown entities to me, although I bought one of the first Kodak printers when they came out and returned it the same day.
I have had good luck with other Canon printers and I like their print quality. The MX320/330 seem to be following in the Canon tradition of good quality printers. Unlike many others, I chose a 2 cartridge print system on purpose. My Canon MX830 was an excellent printer but if you change inks one at a time to save ink it seems like you are changing inks 2 times a week. For the money I don't think you can beat the MX320/330 for an all-in-one printer with a G3 fax. If fax capabilities are not needed I would buy the Canon MP480 or MP620 as these are both excellent all-in-ones without the fax at reasonable prices.

(More customer reviews)We have owned this product now for about 6 months. It is used lightly in a small business environment connected to an Apple Extreme Base Station supporting both PCs and Macs. Setting the device via its web interface is modestly intuitive IF you have a background in network and pc basics. Several of the features though do not work correctly (Fax delay and User id for scan).
The machine works fairly well with pcs and the scan and fax features are available via the network. For the Mac, forget it. Though our sales rep insisted that it does work with OSX, it does not. The only feature available is print via the network. Scanning and fax must be done by connecting the Mac with a USB cable and sadly, with the latest update of OSX, even that no longer works.
More importantly, using the scanning feature via the small LED interface on the machine is very frustrating and time consuming. Scanning a document for email (after it has been setup, this will take you a while) works only if you don't want to send a copy to yourself as well, otherwise, it aborts. Recently we printed a short (4 page) document on a hot humid day and the machine jammed. Not a big deal, they all do sooner or later. The problem is that the feed mechanism is so poorly designed and virtually inaccessible by a user that we had to call Xerox service to come and repair it (a modes fee that would have been free had we taken the machine to the service center and waited) which required significant disassembly of the machine. 3 pages had wrapped around the feed roller and had to be cut out with a knife thus damaging the rubber roller (which they did not have in stock) in the process.
The reason we chose this printer is because Xerox was aggressively pricing the unit against the HP and Canon and Xerox's former reputation. Bad choice. This product is designed very poorly from its arcane software to its badly thought out drive mechanism. To give credit where credit is do, when it does work, it prints quickly and clearly.
This machine is in no way a competitor to the other in class machines from HP or Canon (the others we looked at) and can not be recommended for any reason, even if all you have is a pc network.

(More customer reviews)I have used my MP610 for only one month, but am extremely pleased. I didn't time it, but the "Fast" mode is very fast and better than draft quality for documents. Color does suffer in "Fast" mode. I had banding in a solid black field and colors weren't as true to original. But in 'standard' mode I detected no obvious faults. The 'High' mode with photo paper has outstanding color and detail to my layman eyes. I've printed heavy card stock (45#) with no problem. I dearly love the Duplex feature. I had paper feed problems with my previous HP printer, but this internal Duplex mechanism is much more than I expected at this price. The description and pictures of the product did not addequately show the paper feed options. There is a straight through feed from a raised paper holder in the rear requiring a height clearence of more than 7 inches over the height of the printer. The feed tray also leans slightly back requiring about 4 more inches clearance behind the machine. Also to my surprise there is a paper feed cassette in the bottom of the printer. It pulls out forward to load and then is reinserted. It can hold multiple sized paper, and presents a 'U' shaped feed path. I've yet to use it.
The 610 functions well as a color copy machine. I've used the scanner once to scan a company's gold emblem to use on 'home made' business cards and found the quality more than adequate in color and detail. I have NO complaints, yet.

Epson WorkForce 615 Wireless Color Inkjet All-in-One Printer (C11CA50231) Review

(More customer reviews)I guess this goes with everything now days but I have to say that I used to swear by Epson products. I sold them at multiple levels in different sales jobs and have used them almost exclusively for my printing needs for the last 20 years but, never again will I buy Epson!
This printer and the customer service are just the icing on the cake. I have also the RX595 printer which suddenly decided it does not want to recognize ink cartridges. Gives the message to make sure I am using an Epson cartridge. Went out and bought a complete set for about $90 and of course nothing. Well, I figured I'd work that out later and picked up this workforce 615.
I was very excited about this printer as my main focus was on a quality machine with built in wireless. Well, the machine still works although the print quality to me any way is a bit disappointing. Maybe I was just expecting too much after the 595. The real problem is that the wireless in this printer went out after about 3 months. I went through all of Epson's online support and FAQ's to no avail. Sent an email and they told me it was probably the printer and I should call for warranty. Really, after only 3 months, that sucks but OK. I called and for over an hour was on the phone with tech support. They insisted that even though it will work wire to the router and even though all other wireless devices work and nothing has been changed at the house it can't possibly the printer. I asked for a supervisor and of course "Joe" the person I was passed to hung up on me! Spent another hour on the phone today with some tech that kept telling me to check my computer and router settings even though the printer showed that it's wireless was disabled and would not come on. Well, OK I'll go along. Come to find out after several missteps and wrong instructions the tech today isn't really familiar with Windows XP, he is only confident with Windows Vista! Wow! Not XP, not Windows 7, just vista!? After my hour with him I finally again asked for a supervisor that could just help with warranty since it is so simply a bad unit and he put me on hold for 10 minutes before again, you guessed it, hanging up on me!
I am just amazed and truly saddened by the new direction of Epson as a manufacturer and as a support company. The products simply do not work correctly anymore. I have these two new or newer models and one older model sitting here that are proof. Please, do yourself the favor and steer clear of Epson completely, hopefully they will one day be back to the quality company they once were.

(More customer reviews)I picked the c5550 up at Sam's Club. I needed an all in one that would print on Cd/DVDs. I was replacing an Epson r200 printer that handled CD printing but ate ink and had constant head clogging issues.
So far, the C5550 has exceeded my expectations. Having separate paper and photo paper trays is great. It makes printing trouble free.
Print quality is excellent. Text is very sharp and dark black. Much blacker than the Epson I had been using.
Photos are truly beautiful. I was a bit concerned about this as the c5550 is a 4 color printer, while my old Epson was 6 color. I read that when printing photos on the HP that the three colors in the color cartridge are the only inks used. This means that I was going from 6 colors in the Epson to 3 in the HP.
No need to worry as photo printing is at least as good as the Epsonon photo paper, much better on regular paper. The Epson was very good on photo paper, but did not do well on regular paper - ending up with visible lines in photographs. The HP does phots on regular inkjet paper that are very usable. There is no substitute for photo paper, but there are no visible lines in the HP's output on regular paper.
CD and DVD printing is also excellent. Both the Epson and the HP use a special tray for CD/DVD printing. The tray goes into a special slot in the printer.
The Epson's tray was very flexible and the front edge wore out after time. This made it a chore to feed the tray into the printer. Once you got it to feed, it did a great job of printing directly on the printable CD or DVD.
The HP's tray is much more substantial. It has it's own storage slot in the printer, which will keep it from getting either lost or damaged over time. It seems to feed very smoothly and the printed product is excellent.
HP provides some software for printing CD/DVDs, but it is pretty basic. I found that a shareware program called Sure Thing Labeler v5 works with printer and gives more flexibility in design. If you print a lot of CDs or DVDs, this might be worth the minimal cost to purchase. A 15 day free trial is available to try, and is worth doing so.
Like all inkjets the printer does eat ink. I have read that the supplied cartridges are starter sets, containing less ink than the retail versions of the cartridges.
One advantage that I found with this printer is that the print head is part of the cartridge. As a result, it gets replaced when you buy a new cartridge. As the print head has been the weak spot in every ink jet printer I have ever owned, I liked this feature - even if the cartridges ended up costing a bit more to replace.
From an ink cost perspective, I don't think the cartridges are too bad. The C5550 uses the HP74 (black) and HP75 (color cartridges. These come in regular and XL sizes. The XL versions contain about 3 times the ink at about twice the price of the regular sized cartridges.
You cannot buy after market cartridges for this model, due to the print head being part of the cartridge and HP holding a patent on that part of the ink mechanism. You can, however, easily get refilled original HP cartridges that are cheaper and are supposed to print like the HP originals. I have ordered some refilled carts, but have not yet used them.
I did find that the HP 74 and 75 cartridges are the same size and design as the HP 94 and 95. I ran across an ink refill station for the 94 and 95 cartridges at a local Meijer's store and picked up a black and color version for $20 each. They work and work far better than any other inkjet refill kit I've ever tried to use.
This was the 1st time I ended up with the ink in the cartridges and none on my hands. These refill stations are easy to use. You basically snap a guide on the cartridge, poke a guide hole into the cartridge, snap it into a cartridg holder and insert it into the refilling station. The ink station has the filling needles build in and go to the right depth in the cartridge. You flip the whole thing over and let gravity feed the ink into the cartridge. It takes about 10 minutes and it is full.
In the color cartridge, all three colors fill at the same time. No mess or leakage, and it supposedly will refill them at least 5 times.
After 10 minutes you flip the whole thing back over, remove the cartridge and install it in the printer. I wiped the top of the cartridge off, but there was virtually no ink present on the outside of the cartridge, and it printed fine when inserted back into the printer.
Supposedly you will need to replace the cartridges after 5-6 refills due to the print head wearing out. This still makes refilling a very cost effective was to use this machine.
When I refilled my original cartridges, I took the additional step of removing the labels from them. They just pull off and stay in one piece. When the refilling was done, I put them back over the top of the refill holes. They are working fine using this method.
As others have mentioned, this printer is bluetooth wireless. This means you can print directly from a bluetooth enabled device, such as a camera phone. You can also get a USB-Bluetooth adapter for about $20 if you want to print wirelessly from another computer.
I have two computers on a wireless network. I just enabled printer sharing for the 5550 and it prints fine from either the wireless computer, or, the wired one.
To scan you need a USB connection. This didn't bother me as to scan you have to be at the printer to put a document or photo on the scanner anyway. Overall, I'm completely satisfied with this machine. The software istall went smoothly in an XP machine and all features seem to work as advertised.
Ink costs can be controlled. At the high end you can control costs by buying the original XL versions of the cartridges. You can cut costs considerable by buying refilled cartridges on-line, or really print on the cheap if you're willing to refill.
The only issue I have found with refilling at home is that the printer memorizes a serial number of the ink cartridges installed. When you refill the cartridge it remembers that it had been in the machine and does not reset the ink level.
I have printed from many applications and only get low ink warnings for my refilled cartridges when I'm prpnting from the HP printer software. The software just tells you that ink might be low in the cartridge but lets you continue printing with no problem.
There is apparently a workaround for this that involves the printer's ability to only memorize 2 sets of serial numbers for the cartridges being used. If you have 3 sets of cartridges, you can insert them one at a time and by the time you get to the third set, it will recognize the refilled cartridge serial number as new and set the ink level at full.
I'm not sure this is worth it, as the printer does not seem to nag you about the refilled cartridges, and it prints fine.I was a bit concerned about

Well engineered. Smooth and easy setup. Photos are excellent for a multi-function, nearly as good as my Epson Picturemate.
I thought about buying the more expensive Epson CX5800F because it offers fax. I seldom use fax so instead I'll just scan in the document, then either email or use internet fax.
My only knock is that this is marketed under the overloaded term "All in one" so I guess that makes the CX5800F an "All-er in one". It would be so much clearer if the industry adopted acronyms like PSC or PSCF to clearly distinguish major functions at a glance.

...The machine is a laser printer coier in one. Great buy? Wrong! The machine started with a lot of paper jamming, probably ate some $50 of my paper, only until later I found you should keep the paper stack always with some quantity (mor than 20 sheets?) then the problem goes away, more or less.
My friend later told me it only has a partially filled toner cartridge and a new toner would cost me an arm and a leg. Sure enough, how about a 30% filled cartridge and a...new toner (btw Amazon.com advertises the toner for this is "economical")...
Well, after I run out of toner, I guess I'll just have to pac it up and have it forwarded to XRX's CEO (what's her name?) withmy compliments...
